Progress on The New 66

So I purchased a 1966 LD with a 390 last Tuesday and Havent been able to do anything to it till today and some what yesterday, due to rain and work. Anyways to Start
1-It needed a fender put one I got that in place(for neighbors ) on Wed.
2-I had to purchase a new ignition switch and tumbler and installed it.
3-Battery...I threw the bat in and taped the key just to see if I had power...Nothing. So I tried to jump the stater syleniod and nothing. The ground for the bat is run to the fender and there is a ground comming off the block going to the firewall. Im going to run the ground to the block tomorrow and pull out the handy dandy test light and start at the ground and trace from the ground all the way to the ignition switch to see whats going on
4- I pulled all the spark plugs and poured a big bootle of marvel mystery oil evenly throughout all the cylinders and will let that sit for 2 days to dissolve and build up from sittin.
5- need to run the fuel line to the carb along witht the distributer advance hose.(Not the original Carb)

The cars odometer has 69K but Im not sure if its 69 or 169. The pedals and seats dont look like 169. Im hoping I dont have to do a rebuild this motor to get it running. A reg. rebuild from Autozone I wanna say is 8ish with pistons.

Any other suggetions on what I need to do before trying to start this car up or why Im not getting and power anywhere? Its been sitting for atleast 3 years

Re: Progress on The New 66

Try to turn the motor over by hand. get a socket and a large rachet and put it down on the crack pully. if you can turn it, its not locked up, if not you might have sone rings seized to the cylnder walls or a bigger problem.... good luck...

when i bought my 66 in 2007 it hadn't been on the road since '92. I cleaned the carb, put fresh fuel in it, changed the plugs and oil, turned it by hand, put the battery in, then started it up.... ran like a champ.

but it had absolutly no brakes.... thats why it was parked....do you know why it has been sitting for 3 years? that alway helps

Re: Progress on The New 66

Rust for ground problems will be everywhere. Check the firewall on the interior side for rust. Especially around the fuse box. Drain the old gas and flush the line. As said also rotate the engine by hand first. At least 2 full turns, after you've pulled all the plugs and sprayed a little WD40 in the cylinder. How old are the shocks? Replace them. Replace the brake fluid and drain and bleed the whole brake system. After you get a firm brake pedal, closely inspect all brake hoses, wheel cylinders and the MC for any sign of leakage. Do this several times after using the brake a little. First sign of any leak, replace everything. I'd plan on doing that anyway just for safety. Besides, you don't want to blow threw a stop sign or light and get it smashed.
Drain and replace the coolant. It's old and winter is coming. I'd do the hoses and belts too. Points, probably have some cobwebs and the condensor and coil probably history, unless you know how old they are. Get a bunch of the older fuses and just replace them. You'll have fun chasing shorts as is. Change the engine oil, trans fluid, auto or manual and PS if it has it.
Lots of preventive prep now will save lots of headaches later.

Well I dont know why it hasnt been started. But I can turn the crank by hand its a little tight but its not too too bad thats why Im letting the cylinders soak. I will def replace all the wheel cylinders and most likely the lines too. Is there a way to drain the gas tank?

Re: Progress on The New 66

In your first post you said the ground from the battery is going to the fender? It should be going to the block on the passenger side? Is this correct?
