Noob with a 67 LTD tudor

I just bought at 67 ltd. its a 2bbl 289 v8 with a c4 tranny. the car also came with factory brake booster and power steering. it got it for $2,500.

the cars' not bad over all. its gona need some work to keep her going for another 30 odd years.
what needs to be replaced.
air filter
fuel filter
pcv valve
valve cover replacement
coolant flush
brake flush
radiator
upper control arm bushings
shocks front/rear
tire alignment
tranny service- tranny has delay when in reverse. it clunks hard when tap gas pedal.
gear box leak
power steering leak
rust on roof hidden by vynal (i'll take pictures)
mechanic wanted $2586 just to do all this, except rust removal.
$1108 labor
$1478 parts.

most of this is easy! im going to tackle the small stuff. only dealing with that tranny might troublesome.

my question is: my dash lights dont go on when i put the head lights on. the previous owner installed some bull**** kenwood cd player. maybe that messed things up? i checked the fuses in the glove box. i was wondering if there was any other connectors or relays that i could look at.

Thanks

Re: Noob with a 67 LTD tudor

Welcome to the board.
Straight to your question. The dash lights brightness is controlled by turning the headlight switch knob once it is pulled out. The dimmer is a wire wound resistor. Often because they are left at the same brightness a spot gets burned into the resistor and the contact on the switch and creates a poor connection which often kills the dash lights.

Try turning on the lights and rigourously turning the knob to see if the lights flicker etc.

If not then, the upside is that the contacts are in the open and you can often clean the contact with fine emery cloth/sand paper and bend them in a bit to add some tension to restore the connection.

Good Luck!

LOL... My first thought was what Rich posted, glad he beat me to it.

Welcome to the forum BTW, good to see another '67 owner.

You may also want to check into the wiring for the aftermarket radio as well. Some of them have a wire that can be connected to the radio harness to dim the faceplate when the dash lights come on. That could have been wired incorrectly or if the radio wiring was hacked could be shorted out or otherwise. I don't recall if there is a fuse for the dash lights, but I can look.

Welcome. You found the best board in the world no kidding. LTDs are special, and the fact that its a two door is even better (no offense fordman ). Try to put up some pics soon.

Me or 460? There's two of us hanging out here.

My LTD is also a 2dr. I almost considered a 4dr because I was having a hard time finding a good 2dr. Nothing against em here either.

There is a 4A fuse in the fuse panel in the glove compartment for the instrument lights. It's the 3rd one down above the two that are side by side. Check that fuse and see if its blown and if it is replace it. If blows again pull the fuse and turn the lights on. If you have a multi-meter one side should show 12V and the other 0V (with the fuse out or a blown fuse in) check the side with 0V and see if there is continuity to ground and if so you have a short.

Also, if it is blown, check the wires behind the radio. Look for any wire that is blue with a red stripe. That is an instrument illumination wire. You mentioned someone put a radio in, that could be the cause.

Re: Noob with a 67 LTD tudor

i replaced my ****y radiator with a 302 tbi t-bird one. it took some effort to fit it in but it works great! i also put in a tranny cooler. i plan on tackling the suspension. Do i need leaf springs to lower my 67 ltd?! if so what do you guys recommend?! and what particular shocks and springs would be suitable for the back and front?
