Re: Tranny swap

I'm surprised nobody brought up turning the crossmember around and fabbing the part for the emergency/park brake which is another alternative.

I shouldn't say that, we used the Crites piece but we had to relocate the x-member rear wards. Good luck.

I never thought of that, I'm starting the 390 C6 switch today. Now i'm wondering if the X-member will get in the way of mounting the C6?

On a side note anyone interested in a 223 6Cly with a 3 speed standard, the collumn shift or any parts from it?

You should be fine since you are going to an FE and C-6...except maybe having to notch the x-member. My transmission pan contacted the front leading edge of the x-member. Pretty easy to see and almost as easy to hacksaw and box.

Thanks
USE the crossmember from the 66'. I've done it to my 64' Gal and it works. It positions mount back and down for the C-6. It bolts to the original frame tabs. Get the C-6 mount cause there is a slight diff. in the bolt pattern width. The biggest prob. I encountered was the e-brake cable. You will have to take the old bracket off your original crossmember and re-weld it to the 66' member. Also, remove one cable retainer clip from the floor board just aft of the left body mount. This will give you some more cable to stick thru the cross and attach with the wire clip. Then you may have to shorten the threaded adjusting rod just so it looks better. Good Luck Don

Howdy I have a 63.5 gal and when i got it somebody had all ready put a c6 in it. It looks like they used the later crossmember. The e brake was a cobbled up mess and did not work, was in between the h pipe and driveline with only a 1/4 in clearnce, too tight not a good idea. I had to much slack in the e brake cables. I will be going back in with the engine and tranny in a few weeks [ i hope] and will sort thru the e brake adventure at that time. Glad i don:t have to fight the x frame good luck

Why use a FMX or C6 is a better question?

The car I bought for the motor and trans and auto steering column, drive shaft had the 390 and had already been changed to a c6 so it was cheaper to rebuild both than to get something else. I'm open to a free trans if your offering! LOL!

Re: Tranny swap

C-6 is stronger and in my opinion, more power goes to the wheels. That is just my seat of the pants testing. I know the cruis-o was good when I put in the stroker but after it went bad and I replaced it, it felt like I had more hp. Plus I like to ratchet shift the B&M. Good times, good times.

The OP said he had a FMX, but there was no FMX in 64, so he must actually have a MX - Cruis-o, or whatever it was called in those days. I asked the question about keeping the FMX on the assumption that it was there and presumably working fine. There was no mention of a failed transmission, or the building up of the engine to greater than stock power levels. The C6 is known as the king of Ford auto transmissions, at least from a strength, power handling point of view. it is also know as being a power hog, which is why many drag racers seem to prefer the the C4, when it can handle the power, because it is more efficient at power transmission, as I've heard on this forum many times. I've never seen, or heard numbers on the power loss through the FMX, but the guy who rebuilt mine last year said he remebers lots of guys running them in drag cars once upon a time, so they could be made to handle power. I think the C4 - 6 are newer designs and aluminum bodies vs cast iron, so some good reasons why they would be good choices if you need to change your trans.
