Tranny swap
I was wondering if you all can help me out here. I have a 64 galaxie convertable with a 428 and a fmx. Im trying to put in a c6 out of a 66 2 door hardtop galaxie but running into problems with the crossmember issue. Is there an easy way around this or is it just a fabracate part to do this swap.
Thanks

Re: Tranny swap
I used the one on this page when I put a C6 behind my FE. \http://critesrestoration.com/galaxie.htm It didn't work for the AOD in convertible but that shoudl do it for you. It's listed as " FE or 460 trans C6 crossmember w insulator - $125"

Re: Tranny swap
gbeeler, is this the one you used for your 64? [SIZE=-1]1957-59 or 60-62 Ford C6 trans. Crossmember and insulator - $125
The only one I saw for a 64 is the extension for $35.

Re: Tranny swap
I bought a 64 car for the 390 and the c6 and it had the 2 flat plates from crites that bolted to the original crossmember and bolted to the original mounting spots on the frame. Not really impressive but it worked.
$35 dollars seems like a lot for 2 pieces of flat plate with 4 holes drilled in each one.

I used the insulator for around $40.00. I didn't see that when I was looking. thought maybe they had only the full xmember and isolator now. I did have to notch the front for the xmember and box it in to allow the pan to clear but it fit ok, other than that.
I just looked and what I posted was for a mid to late 50's Ford. Sorry. It is the $35.00 version that I used.

What's wrong with the FMX? Why change it?

Seriously? Just razin ya. But to answer your question, first of all, the car came with a cruis-o-matic which older and holds less hp. Secondly, the worst part is that you can not select 1st gear. You can only manually shift from second to third. Not a great combonation if you want to do any "funnin" on the streets. I had a completely rebuilt cruis-o in my hardtop when I had the 390. 140 miles behind the 431 stroker and she came apart. Just can't handle it and their really are next to zero parts you can buy for them to strengthen them. C-6 is awesome transmission in these cars. You can usually find and build up a C-6 for less than just rebuilding a cruis-o. Atleast up here that holds true.

Re: Tranny swap
Thanks for the helps guys. Im hoping that part on crites works cause being its a convertible it runs on the x frame style and the drive line goes though a hole in it. So if I move the fmx crossmember back the narrower the frame is.

Re: Tranny swap
hi guys, My two cents worth ?? When you get your c6, make sure you get a later version. The early 1966 models had some problems, The forward clutch drum only has 4 clutch plates and will not hold a high hp engine. They also made several changes to the the valve body in that time period. I would try and get a 68 thru early 70 s trans, I think you will find the shift kits and such or more for the later units. My two cents worth hope this help you.

Re: Tranny swap
I put a 514 ci motor in our 64' Galaxie convertible and was hoping the Crites piece would work with the AOD. No luck, but since it was a frame off, I can guarantee you that the x-members are identical whether you have a hardtop or a vert. I shouldn't say that, we used the Crites piece but we had to relocate the x-member rear wards. Good luck.
