Re: 63 Galaxie Kick Down Linkage

That's the detent linkage and should be hooked up to a kick down lever.

Why you don't have one is beyond me since you are driving an auto...

Re: 63 Galaxie Kick Down Linkage

I'm new to all of this. Is the kick down the part that is back more toward the fire wall that has the throttle linkage coming off of? Should there be another lever beside the the throttle linkage that attaches to the detent linkage? The black boomerang with the spring on it in my second photo?

Re: 63 Galaxie Kick Down Linkage

The kickdown is part of the bellcrank assembly at the rear of the intake. It is an integral part of the accelerator linkage. In later years a separate rod was used for this function. If you look behind the intake you will see a rod running down to your transmission. You can see the rod in the second picture I posted.

Re: 63 Galaxie Kick Down Linkage

I don't see the kid's kick down linkage, and I forgot all about the linkage being where it is on these. I was thinking about a different style.

His carb lever that is ties up IS the kick down lever for a different application...

Re: 63 Galaxie Kick Down Linkage

So what I'm hearing is (1 of two things):

Since the carb is off of a later model Galaxie, maybe that is just an extra part that serves no purpose on this particular car and thats why someone tied it out of the way?

OR

My transmission kick down is not hooked up right, or even at all?

Re: 63 Galaxie Kick Down Linkage

The part on your carb is where the other style of kickdown goes. I can see your kickdown in the pic you posted. It comes off the bellcrank and goes down on top of the bellhousing to the transmission linkage on the side of the transmission. You can verify this by moving the rod and making sure it is attached to the transmission.

Re: 63 Galaxie Kick Down Linkage

you can put a spring on it -towards the front , or drill out the indentation above the throttle shaft weld, and put a screw there. the dashpot was there to prevent sudden closing of the throlle witch would cause a large vacuum on the idle circuit- too rich- stalling.

Yes again... I didn't see it but he did so it must be there.

Leave the throttle linkage exactly as it sits since it's not hurting anything...

Re: 63 Galaxie Kick Down Linkage

Ok. Cool. I've definitely been schooled on what I'm looking at now and what a kick down looks like and does. I'll leave it alone, but will at least put a nicer looking tie on it instead of a bread bag tie! I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some obvious part missing or something that was potentially unsafe. Thanks for all of the info.
