Re: She's Alive!!

Those compression numbers don't look so good, there is a significant range. Are the wet and seeping plugs related to the low reading cylinders? The low cylinders may not be firing, or firing intermittently, but they certainly will be weak if and when they do fire. The next thing to check is whether the compression loss is from the valves or the rings. One day on Horse Power I saw them take an old spark plug, knock the porcelain and guts out it and weld an air fitting in the end. You then screw the tool into the plug hole, connect an air hose and look for where the air is coming out in order to help diagnose the potential problem.

Re: She's Alive!!

I think Im just going to pull the heads off and send them to a machine shop and have them check it all out and fix anything that needs to be done. I dont know how to tell if its a blown gasket or valves. I know how to check for rings.

Re: She's Alive!!

how are you going to check ring leak down with the heads off-???
and if you put the heads back on and then check leakdown -you have to pull the engine back apart to ring and bearing it -- ???

Re: She's Alive!!

If its been sitting a long time, the rings are probably stuck. Get some SeaFoam and pour a little in the CCs. Let it sit over night. Crank the engine with no plugs, disconnect the coil, and no fuel to get it all out. Replace the plugs and have another go.

And if you haven't changed the fuel in the tank, it should be fresh.

Re: She's Alive!!

Well I plan on running a check for the rings before I pull the heads off. No sense in not checking it.

Re: She's Alive!!

You already did a compression test.... that pretty much is the test for the rings. Leak down is primarily for the head.

Re: She's Alive!!

Well if its a blown head gasket then the compression check will be low because loss of compression through the blown head gasket, correct? Any how do you do a leak down test?

Re: She's Alive!!

first you have to have the cyl at tdc. off a little, and the piston will go down. next - put air in the cyl. 100 psi is good. listen at: tailpipe-burnt exh valve, intake- burnt intake valve, oil fill hole- rings-piston-head gasket, radiator fill-head gaslet-cracked head. do this for each cyl. before going to all this work, do the sea foam in the cyls, then do anothe compression test. make sure you have a charger connected to the battery to keep test rpm the same.
