Which intake

I am wondering which intake to bolt up to my 390.
Either a new performer rpm, or a second hand Streetmaster.
Is the RPM just the new name of the Streetmaster, or is one better than the other?
Thanks.
David.

Hi I am using the performer on my 63.5, i would rather be using the rpm performer but i don think it would clear the hood. I know the performance would be much better with the rpm. I do not want to chage the hood. Measure carfully before ordering. hope this helps Bob

Re: Which intake

Well, big thing is do not expect a lot of RPM out of the 390. We took one to Ontario MS back years ago for tire testing. One engine was giving out at about 5600 RPM the other jsut before it hit about 6000 RPM, all due to valve float. The hydraulic system pumped up the lifters and thus the end of high RPM.

Re: Which intake

I could be wrong, but I thought the streetmaster intakes needed work in the runners to flow decent, whereas the Performer RPM is decent out of the box. There is even a sheet from Edelbrock somewhere that shows that needs to be done that I can't seem to find right now. Given the choice, I'd go with the RPM unless you want to do the port work for fun.

Clearance will be tight with the RPM though. I'm running a Performer RPM on my 390 in my '62. I've got a 1" adapter to go to a *gasp* Quadrajet and run a 1.5" tall air cleaner and its super tight fit to close the hood. I've been pleased with the performance of it, didn't seem to take much of a loss on the bottom end power and picked up bit on the midrange and top end. Shedding 30+lbs from the cast iron intake was great too.

The RPM is still a dual plane while the Streetmaster is single plane.

I found this about the Streetmaster porting:
Ford FE Intake Porting
It sounds like they really didn't get it right. It might compare to the Victor series they have now with an RPM range starting at 3500.

Edelbrock claims a 1500 to 6500 rpm range on the RPM. I'd say go with the newer design of the RPM if you want to drive it on the street at all.

FYI. The Edelbrock sites list of current Fords manifolds.

Re: Which intake

I have the chance to get a Offenhauser dual port, which seems to be a real dual plane set up,
Would this be a better inlet than the RPM or is it just choice.
I think the Offy is a bit lower than the RPM, so that may help with any height issues.
David.

Re: Which intake

I've run an Offy 2x4 360* and liked it. I don't race so I never took advantage of it. The consciences on the Dual Port seems to be blah. Good concept, bad execution. Phrases like "doorstop" come up. Nobody would recommend it over an RPM.

The dimensions of the RPM are about .5" taller that the performer. Which means you should expect it to be .5" taller than stock. Depending on what you want, you might get away with a small diameter air filter or a modified base to recess a 15" to clear the hood. That is providing your not running any spacers. I ran a 1" spacer with my Holley for the PVC. Now I run a 1/4" modified stock spacer with it. My Carter doesn't need it because it has a PVC connection on the carb. But I'm running Performers, not RPMs.
