Re: 61 galaxie vaccum wiper convert.

I did it to my 61 Falcon last week and it took about 25 minutes....

I got the electric wipers motor out of a 62 Falcon and it bolted right in. Maybe it's the same for your Galaxie. There are 3 bolts in my application to remove, and two clips, and you're done.

The Switches were identical... A cable in my 61 moved a valve on the old motor and the same cable moved a very similar valve on the electric motor but the innerds were different.

They never are cheap

I don't know if the Falcon motor will fit the Galaxie as the wiper transmission is different on the Gal due to the width...

I got the whole car (elec. wipers, 5 lug suspension good sheet metal to trade ETC... for $250!)

good deal, i guess I'm just going to have to do a little investigating. I'm going to pull it apart later tonight and see what I have to work with.

Re: 61 galaxie vaccum wiper convert.

I put a 63XL two speed electric motor on one of my 61 Starliners. I had to do a lot of fab work to make it work, mostly because I have the largest Vintage Air system I could get under the dash and it and the wiper motor were trying to occupy the same space.
I used the 63 motor and switch and would of had to modify the shaft even without the space issue. The problem is that the 61 has wipers that mount evenly spaced on the windshield and later big fords use wipers offset on the windshield so that they both go from right to left at the same time. They have to do this in order to make them "Park" properly I am told?

Re: 61 galaxie vaccum wiper convert.

there seems to be a lot of room under the dash for a motor to go my car doesn't have AC or anything really but the linkage assembly is going to be an interesting project to make work with another motor that's for sure.

Re: 61 galaxie vaccum wiper convert.

Yes there is a lot of room if you are not going to install an in dash AC system.

What you have to take in to consideration is that the Vacuum system is for the most part centered around the spindle shaft but the electric units usually have the shaft toward one end of the unit and they are much longer than the vacuum unit.

I have some of the aftermarket units that advertise that they will fit a 61 but I have never used one myself?

For me the easiest way to adapt a unit from another car is to remove the dash. It looks like a lot of work and to some degree it is but fibbing brackets for to make a unit work with what you have is much much harder with the dash in the car.
