Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much

After changing the vacuum advance canister, you may have to check and reset the points and re time the engine.

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much

Good one, Deb! there were instructions in the box showing cars and # of CCW turns for each, but I couln'nt figure out how to turn the arm. I'll look in the tube.

Your idea gives a link to the symptoms. as the car gets warmer the vacuum might change, affecting the timimng per fordman, something like that?

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much

Does the carb have a choke? You want to set your idle with the engine fully warmed up. My guess is the problem lies in the stuff you changed in the distributor not being set up properly.

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much

After I put in the new Vacum advance things did not go so well,

So when the sun went down today I got out my neon timing light. I was off the mark by 6" or so (left side).

Jusr wanted all on this tread to know that it all turned out okay for me.

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much

So you've set the correct timing and everything is right now?

Yes. Tip: get a new vacuum advance? get some new timing.

The idling at 1100 was cured mostly by backing off on the cold idle screw. Tip 2: What looks good on the bench doesn't always work out under operating conditions.

I took it on the highway this ayem and it ran past 70 without shaking (good). Oil not getting above 25 (bad), but water at a cool 182 (good). All that disassembly for painting killed the A/C (bad), But - winter coming on (good)! Heater barely putting out (bad). Three people admired my Gal this morning ... Good.. bad, good... I guess this is all our stories!

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much

Yup! That rod connecting the can to the points plate also locates it. Different can= different timing. Changing the point gap also alters the timing.
