Idle ok, in gear not so much
For background, I pulled lots of stuff off the engine, painted and replaced some of it and now, back together again, there is an issue.
Little trouble starting, got to pump it, but once it gets going it is pretty smooth. I have the idle set high, 1100 rpm, the water temp 180, vacuum is 19, oil 24.
Parking brake on, I slip it into drive. It wants to die, I feather it. Ok, idle settles down, but but RPMs drop to 550 rpm, vacuum drops to 11, oil to maybe 15. All that dropping when I put it in gear does not seem right. What is going on here?

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much
Sounds like timing is way off or there is a big vacuum leak somewhere.

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much
geess your idle should be 650 -- set the idle -and adjust your carb--

Make sure the vacuum to the tranny is connected and no leaks. An easy start at least.

I don't understand as to just why the oil pressure is so low. That sort of worries me.

I'd guess because the RPM's are so low.

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much
That's what I would say. Get your idle in gear to 650-700 and your oil pressure should be around 20. Nothing wrong with that.

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much
I fired her up just now and though it took a couple of tries the rpms settled at 700, vacuum at 14 and oil at 26. When I dropped it into gear (parking brake on), I got rpms 550, vacuum 11 oil 26. So not too bad.
As the car warmed up though, the numbers changed to what I wrote yesterday. at 180 degrees: rpm rose to 1100, vacuum to 19, oil 24. Shift to gear and I get some drops: rpm 600, vacuum 10, (oil held at 23).
Something is not right. One of the parts I swapped was I replaced the vacuum advance for an O'Reilly V309. To my eye the arm was identical. I did have to cut my flared tube and use a hose to connect it up. Six months ago I replaced the vacuum modulator in the auto transmission. And the oil breather cap smokes. That's all the weird things I can think of.

Re: Idle ok, in gear not so much
Some of the modulators have an adjustment but believe that only effects the shifting. Can't remember if the vacuum advance has a little adjusting screw inside the vacuum tube or not. Maybe someone here knows this?
