Re: Front Coil Spring on a 1965

I run Crites headers, pretty much the same as your Mad Dogs.
I drive the car everywhere, all over Wis, Minn, Ill, Michigan, etc and the only time I bottomed out was when I put smaller dia tires on the car.And that was on a trip to Detroit, which has some of the worst potholed streets Ive ever seen. And thats with new factory big block springs in the car.
Nice looking Galaxie you have there

Re: Front Coil Spring on a 1965

65460 when you say you had trouble when running a small diameter tire what size are you refering to? I am running a 225/70 14" that has a 26.5" diameter. I have the engine in and will be installing the headers thanksgiving week. I am also looking to replace my springs front and back as my rears are week and the fronts are 289.

I do not want to change rim/tire combo as I am running 14" old school torque thrusts and the tire litterally have 50 miles on them. I bought them new on sale just before the engine swap.

With my tire diameter should I look at the extra 1" for ground clearance, if so any part numbers to use? I was just going to do what shifttis did use springs rated for the 429 with A/C. I want a level or slightly forward raked look, I do not want the nose in the air and the rear lower.

Thanks

Terry

P.S. A big thanks to 65460 for the information on grinding the ribs on my transmission case. I took the 6" off like you said and I dropped the engine/trans in together the first time right in place with no interference, of course after rotating the trans crossmember 180.

Re: Front Coil Spring on a 1965

I ordered the big block springs last night they showed a 8334 and a 8336, I went with the 8336 they had a higher spring rate and just a little more spring load and same height installed. Thanks for the input. Next Item disc brakes!

Re: Front Coil Spring on a 1965

i got a set of disc off a 65 merc montclair. they are the 4 piston type and are the same through 67 and ford used these from 66-67. if you use these you will need the spindles and the brake hose is different to. get the brake line T cause it has the proportioning valve built in. i used the 65 lincoln contenental rotors i wanted a 5x5 bolt circle and i used Willwood dynalite disc kit for a big bearing ford on the rear and the willwood proportioning valve. 1968-73 big ford single piston calipers will also interchange and you get better wheel clearence with those calipers.

Terry, The only question I can answer for you is what tire size Im running now, which is a 235/70 15. That tire is 27.95 in dia.
I dont recall what tire size the others were that caused me to bottom out.
I dont know what to tell you about which springs to use other then what I said about the stock big blocks springs I used in my car. Sorry I cant help you on this.
