FE Engine Identification
I am pretty certain that it is impossible to tell by looks/numbers on an FE engine as to which variety it is. However, is there a way to make an educated guess? I purchased a 66 LTD 4 door that had been wrecked because the engine was just redone.
I checked the VIN today, and the car was a C code ( 289-2V Challenger V-8, 200 hp @ 4400 rpm, 282 ft-lbs @ 2400 rpm, 9.3:1 compression ratio).
I would really like to have a good guess as to what I have and am putting in my Galaxie. It has an autolite 4100 (the 600CFM version), and I took a pic of the following number on the intake with my phone. It has the casting # C6AE and then below it 42 - G. Does that give us any clues?
I'll see the car again tomorrow morning (it is about 50 miles away) if I need to get any more numbers/info.

Re: FE Engine Identification
Anyone can swap an intake over.
What you need is the block and head casting numbers to get an accurate as possible ID.

Re: FE Engine Identification
I can get the head #'s, but where is the block casting # on these old FE's?

Re: FE Engine Identification
Block casting wont do much, heads gets you some info.
Unfortunately, most all from that era are C6ME-A block, regardless of displacement. Heads may tell you a little more, but even then they used them across all kinds of short blocks
Best thing to do is to take a wooden down with you, pull a plug and turn it over. Mark the dowel at the top of the stroke and the bottom.
The difference will be:
3.5 inches = 352/360
3.78 inches = odds are 390 unless crossbolted, but slight odds could be 406
3.98 = 410 or 428
It equates to 3.5 / 3.75 / 4 inches all far enough to even WAG with a ruler and a dowel.
My guess is 352 or 390

Why are you asking about an FE engine???? A 289 is a small block ford....

Hey Mr. M427S,
If one forgets to take a dowel, one can use the Dip Stick.

Re: FE Engine Identification
This engine have a two barrel carb or a four barrel one? I get blurred images here only.
Identifying the carbonator will eliminate 1/2 about the engine possibilites, as 428 engines did not come with two barrel carb's normally.
