Exclamation Need Engine/Transmission Help!

Hey Guys,

First off, I don't really know anything about Fords so work with me here, I only what what I have read in the last few days.

My friend has a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 we have been working on. It has an automatic transmission.

In Summary:

- Original Motor unknown, was swapped to a 289 at some point
- Motor was seized
- Assumed motor was 64/65+ 6 bolt motor
- Bought a 302 to put in it
- Took out the old motor, found out it was an early 5 bolt 289

So...a few questions:

1.) How do I identify the transmission in the vehicle?
2.) What would have come from the factory with this vehicle?
3.) Would I be better off changing the transmission or just the bell housing?
4.) Is a 6 bolt bell housing available for the transmission?

Any information would be GREATLY appreciated. THANKS EVERYONE!

What's with the Ford forum links in your post? Is this some sort of spamming post? Very auspicious ( suspicious?) for a first post.

Re: Need Engine/Transmission Help!

if it is a C4 Tranny yes there is a 6 bolt bell housing available you will need a bellhousing for the 164 starter ring i know for a fact that from about 77 up trucks had a 6 bolt bellhousing, chances are the galaxie came with a v-8 but to say which one it came with would be foolish because there were a few diffrent motors in these vehicles, does the tranny shift 2 times are 3 times if only twice it would be the old fordomatic tranny, if it is look for a tranny pretty tuff little trannys but not tuff enough for any type of real horses!! hope this helped!!

Re: Need Engine/Transmission Help!

Rich27028 - Thanks for the link. I will find out for certain what type of transmission is in the car tomorrow morning.

CaptVirgilHilts - Sorry about that, copied the text from my post on that website, I guess it took the links with it. I edited my post and removed them.

Mcdaniel01 - Its definitely a 3 speed. Most likely a Cruise-O-matic, but I will find out for sure tomorrow.

Re: Need Engine/Transmission Help!

Hey Guys,

It would appear I am working with the original transmission, a Medium Case Cruise-O-Matic MX or FX.

They only made the medium case Cruise-O-Matics until 1968.

If when the smaller (FMX) case came out (1968-1981) the bellhousings were the same I would be in good shape.

However, if the bellhousings are indeed different, I would be looking for a new bellhousing under strict guidelines. Would have to be a 1965-1968 Cruise-O-matic.

Anyone have any information to offer?
