package tray ?

Hey guys where are you getting your package trays from for the 63.5 fastbacks.

I looked thru Dearborne and all they have is the Boxtop version.

Re: package tray ?

I have used the one Dearborn sells on a fastback and it worked but that was on a 64.

Re: package tray ?

I think most here make their own actually since most aren't available.

Re: package tray ?

On a 65 sedan: remove seat. Cut all around the ruined speaker holes with a jig saw. Then lay that piece on a piece of hardboard of similar thickness, trace the outline and cut it out. Place that piece in the hole that you cut in the package tray. For support, trace another outline in another hardboard but add 2" all the way around. Glue or screw that piece to the bottom of your new package tray. Then put some bondo in the gap on top, get 2 yards of vinyl or cloth, cut to fit, and glue that to the new tray with 3M 77 contact cement, leaving enough material hanging over the front to cover the gap (if any) between the tray and the back of the seat. Add 1/2" of seat-cushion type foam if necessary for a non-rattle fit. Slip the new tray in, replace seat.

Deb

Back when, on my 1963 1/2 I made my own out of 1/8 pressed wood from lumber yard, and then got materials from local upholsterer. Weighted down the old one with cylinder heads as used old one for a pattern, and glued new material on top using contact cement.

Cost? Less than $20.

Old one was up against a leaky rear window, had warped, previous owner had carved in some BIGGIE speaker holes via the trunk. Speakers were long gone, but not the holes.

You need to be critical with upholstery shop material, and not select just whatever they hand you too. Needs to match your idea too.

Wm.

Re: package tray ?

If your package tray was originally flat, yes it is easier, cheaper and better to replace the whole thing. Some are curved around the edges, though. On those you can get a better fit by replacing just the middle.
