Thanks for all the replies guys, This one has me stumped? I am well aware that FE listings in most places are far from complete and most of the motors I have worked on have something that is not as listed but this one is really strange?
First the block is clearly cast with C7ME-A and that only shows up as a 428 in all the references I have found. However no matter how poor my measuring skills are when an object will fit into a known 390 cylinder and not into this cylinder then it clearly has to be smaller that the 390 size!
Second the rods are C7TE-A. This shows to be for an FT motor but all FT motors have a larger crank snout and I put a 390 balancer on this crank snout and it fits. This rules out an FT as they all had the larger snout as far as I am aware?
Third, the crank appears to be steel with the small parting lines and does not carry a stamping number? The only markings I can find on it are a "14" stamped on the front counterweight and what appears to be a J on the center counterweight? The J could be a lightly marked U which would once again indicate a 428 but as I measure the crank it appears to have a 3 5/8" stroke as measured with a ruler again.
And finally the block does not have the 428 casting in either of the 4 places where it is usually found in the water jackets nor does it have the C or A scratching on the rear of the block.
I am still thinking it is a 352 or 360 but can not confirm? I will be taking it to someone who can perform all the exact measurements later in the week.
While I was dragging out the 390 block I looked at the casting numbers on it and guess what, there are no casting numbers on it but it has numbers stamped on it C6A-F 6015-E X8? What do you think that means? I am thinking it is some kind of service block replaced while the vehicle (63XL) was still under warranty?
Small parting lines will more than likely be cast not steel. Large ones for a forged steel crank. I think you have a 352. 3.5 stroke and 4.00 bore. And I would like to correct myself on "no '67 352's". Mercury had them.
You know... With the missing 428 markings that the 428's carried, and the stroke, and the bore being like it is....
It don't friggin MATTER what the engine IS!
What matters is what you are going to make it BECOME....

I got the short block from a friend who said he thought it might be a 390 but really did not remember where he got it from. I need a good 390 block so I picked it up.
I am not sure what I will wind up doing with it? If I don't some work to do soon I will likely get rid of it along with a lot of other parts but if something comes along then I plan some type of stoker out of it?
