c6 trans

1972 full size ltd type highway patrol interceptor with a 429 has PRNDS on the column shift selector. the transmission only shifts ONE time and feels like it starts off in 2nd and shifts to 3rd , the car is fast from a dead stop , transmission looks exactly like a c6 , i checked an old ford parts manual for the early 70's and it has a part # for the PRNDS gear selector along with the standard PRND21 selector anybody know anything about this ? the transmission has 2 gears thats it !!! cannot shift below S

Re: c6 trans

Run it in drive and pay real close attention, I'm sure it will shift twice. As far as the selector not having low gear, that was common on police cars back then. I think they did it cause the cops were too hard on the engines and over-revved them in low gear, so they locked out the manual low gear.

Re: c6 trans

1st to second is really hard to feel and is at a really low speed so you might be just missing it. If you look at previous threads here there is someone asking how to identify the tranny and there are a couple links to places to id by pan shape.

Re: c6 trans

I never saw one on a Ford product, but years ago I had a 78 Plymouth Fury cop car that low gear was locked out on. It was accomplished with a very simple bracket attached to a couple of pan bolts that physically blocked the travel of the shift lever. The cure was equally as simple, sh!tcan the bracket.
