What Carb??

Just looking to see what kinda carb to get. I have a 390 I plan on doing some mods here some day lol But it has a 2 barrel Holly on it right now and it was shooting gas out of the top! What would be the best to use? I also have a 4 barrel at home and I think its a stock 480? not sure though.

Hey Mr. T,
You have an FE engine, but what year and model of car?

If what you have is stock, then rebuilding it would be the best.

If it isn't stock, then getting one that IS is best.

If you are going to modify your engine, then what Intake Manifold you are going to get is necessary to know. And along with the Intake Manifold, the Cam, and Exhaust Manifolds are salient.

"A stock 480"? Have any more information on THIS?

If you go with a 4V Intake Manifold, then an Autolite 4100 is a GREAT Carburetor. ASK Deb!

Hey Mr. T,
To do that he would have either had to put a 4V Intake Manifold on it, or an Adapter Plate to accept a 2V Carburetor. Check to see whether the Intake Manifold is a 4V, a 2V, or a 4V with an Adapter Plate.

Depending on what Carburetor you have, a Rebuild Kit will cost from $30.00 to $50.00. And then if you do it yourself, it won't cost any more for labor, though you will need some supplies, such a Berryman's ChemTool, and Berryman's ChemDip, and some NEW tools if you don't have the one's you need.

If you have someone else build it for you, they would have to tell you how much they were going to charge.

But most likely, for what it would cost to buy the kit and have someone else do the deed, you could probably buy a NEW bolt-on unit.

Let me say this though, if you've NEVER rebuilt a Carburetor, it's a REAL learning experience, and with all the help available, almost ANYONE can do it. I had never rebuilt a Carburetor, and I rebuilt an Autolite 4100 for Ms. American 3.14159

Autolite 4100 1.12 C4AF-9510 DG Carburetor

And a Holley 1920 for Lorrie Van Haul, and it was a BLAST!

HTH

Re: What Carb??

2v--two barrel carb-

4v four barrel carb--

if its got a 2 barrel carb on it now you cant put a 4 barrel on untill you change the intake

Hey Mr. T,
A 4V is a Four Venturi Carburetor = A "4 Barrel". A 2V is a Two Venturi Carburetor = A "2 Barrel".

Do you mean "How do you know if it's a 4V Intake Manifold?"

If THAT'S what you are asking, look at the Base of the Carburetor. Is there but two studs sticking up from the Intake Manifold by which the Carburetor is held in place? If there are, then it is a 2V Intake Manifold. BUT if it has four studs sticking up and a plate held in place by them, then that is an adapter plate on a 4V Intake Manifold to which a 2V Carburetor is attached.

If you could post a JPG of the Carburetor where it shows the base, then it could be definitely determined.

Also, look on the Driver's side "foot" of the Carburetor. It will have the Model Number stamped on it. Get those Numbers and Letters and the Brand of the Carburetor. Then more can be known about your unit.

Hey Mr. G-Z,
I equivocated over that some time after that was posted. At the time, I was thinking about the 1V Holley 1920 that is going onto Lorrie. It only has two mounting holes.

Anyway, thanks for catching that.

Hang in there.

Re: What Carb??

This adaper is for using a 2bbl with a 4bbl intake. If you have something like under your carb then you have a 4bbl intake.
