3rd Party Autoparts Are Illegal?
Interesting thing happened to a buddy last week in court here. He was cited for "excessive noise" for his car (aftermarket exhaust). Judge went on record to say that if the exhaust system was not provided by the original manufacturer of the car, then it was deemed illegal? Realize this is Canada, but wonder if anyone else had this kind of situation? Cheers!

I was watchin a thing on TLC a few years ago about the ricer fad and street racing. They did the show in canada, and part of it was showing it from the police side as well as the street racers view. One of the officers was giving a briefing before going out to catch them, and mentioned to look for a big stove pipe exhaust, cuz even if they couldnt prove they were part of the racing scene, they could get em for an illegal exhaust system.

That seems like BS to me, since they *sell* the exhaust systems in canada. It's not like you can go and buy weed from your local shop, and just not smoke it, if you're SMOKING it it's illegal but we'll sell it to you just for fun...right.
Likely there was some violation that *involved* the exhaust, such as noise/polution etc. The judge might have meant that if you change your exhaust system without getting your vehicle re-tested for emissions, it's not legal to drive around in it, which would make sense.

Fuzzy, Without knowing all of the facts it sounds like we are dealing with some little traffic court judge( not that it matters) who doesn't know what he is talking about. Yes they can hit you with excessive noise....but I am pretty darn sure that the little lecture about only being oem is just a rather large pile. Now with reference to other equipment...yes they can nail you

I saw the show Darell mentioned, in some of the cities they have made anything that sounds or looks like racing equipment illegal. They will get you when you are parked if they don't like the looks of your car. The main focus is on the roudy, ricer types.

You remember those trick license plate covers that disquise your plate from the cameras, its not illegal to sell them, just illegal to put them on. Same as pot pipes, its not illegal to sell them, but is illegal to have one on your possesion. This world is all fu*ked up, just have to deal with it I guess.

A friend of mine is a California Highway Patrolman. He has it in the code book that "technically' it is illeagal to modify the exhaust from the factory. This is very old. The CHP do not enforce this. However if your being very very loud or acting like a jerk they will write you up for excessive noise. It has been that way here in L.A. since I've been driving,25 years now. Damm, NOW I FEEL OLD.

3rd Party Autoparts Are Illegal?
Recently I was stopped by the HP, he hit his lights when he was 50 yards away coming towards me then he proceeded to inform me that me exhaust was illegal, my windows were to dark, had to have a front license plate, in short he was going to write me up for 9 different violations. I asked him to show me in the book where I had to have original equiptment exhaust and he couldn't find it. Each muffler was going to be a seperate ticket!! I had my brother and his 60 year old father in law with me and we were just putting around not doing anything. The states are all broke now and are going to use the police to raise revenues. I talked to the supervisor of the patrolman who pulled me over and he said he could hear us talking over the sound of my car running on the video and he didn't think I had done anything wrong. Like they said on Hill Street Blues...Lets be careful out there!!!!

3rd Party Autoparts Are Illegal?
I got pulled over about twenty years ago when I was a kid. It was actually an ongoin thing of about three or four times a year. On this particular evening I was leaving the drive-in movies about 1:00 am when I was interupted by the local patrol. He said that he ran my plates and that they were for an orange 70 Cougar (I had recently painted it)Being the early age smart ass and upset over being pulled over I repied that the paint can said "blue". He tried to tell me that the car was stolen. When it was all done I was let go with a warning(for what I never knew) and was told to have my registration changed to show the diff. car color. Another time I put plates, insurance and mufflers on my super modified mustang and ran it for awhile but they didn't like that either...Bob
