Building cars! Part scavenger hunt and part chess game!

Man! I was just thinking about how much thought hasta go into building a car?

All the pieces with all the pre planning are really hard to imagine sometimes?

Think of how many parts go into a car that all have to be factored in long before you install them?

Do you guys see where I'm going with this?

I know exactly where you're goin with this buddy (I hope so at least). lol

Personally I've always been more fascinated with how engines work though. I mean, every component of the engine and how everything works together is just pure genious and to think, you start it all with just the simple turn of a key.

Oh yeah, and how almost everything making up a car is held together with little threads on bolts, nuts, screws, etc.

Yes, the "scavenger hunt" deal for me is trying to find the right parts and wrangle them up in one place to assemble.

The "chess game" is trying to pick the right parts that will fit the combo in its finished state?

Some of the steps with the Falcon build up were taken years ago and now I'm glad that those parts bought and put on back then are the ones that the car will need when done.

So many factors that you hafta think of way in advance of when you might buy or install them.

If you don't factor all this stuff in you end up buying parts twice or re-doing stuff you already had done on the car.

It's all good and fun it's just that I don't think some guys think about how much thought goes into the cars they build up.

DT, I can relate. It's worse building a street rod; you have to enineer/design/choose every single component. Actually, I enjoy the planning stage. If it weren't for planning, what would we do at work all day?

Plan?!? Hell, if I'd had a plan the car would have "finished" years ago. What fun is that??? We don' NEEED no stinkin' plan!

I seem to get it in a state, then think "Hmmm, if I did THAT...". The treasure hunt is part of the fun, for me anyway. I did not plan the appearance of the car very well. Actually, the goal was All One Color. But drivetrain is planned way ahead. That's why I spent big bucks building a 9" when the 8" would have handled it for a while. I knew that "while" would be over eventually.

Car Craft made fun of people putting fuel cells in 12 second cars. Well, it may not always be a 12 second car. When that upgrade comes, the support systems are in place. No extra expense required. Guess my priorities are exposed now.

Hahaha!

My thoughts exactly Chris!

I have picked everything I have from a junkyard or used and usually have a very vague idea of where I am going with it!

My bestest bud on the other hand, plans, orders, buys new always, budgets and has a goal within time frames of what he wants done when he undertakes a project.

I admire the fellow.

When he comes over and looks at the stuff I have going on he asks why I even think of building something when I have no money and no plan of attack.

I just smile.

I, along with everyone else here is looking forward to Dyno Tom's endevour and like seeing the plan of his unfold!

I gave up on having a "plan" a long time ago. I change my mind more than a woman with PMS! Fun thinking about all the details though... gets staggering with 14 projects

Dyno Tom,

Next time you're out on a "scavenger hunt" see if you can find me a deck lid for a '57 T-Bird?

My dad is the worst/best at getting the parts early. He TYPICALLY takes 20 - 30 YEARS to restore his cars. His 32 Woody Model B is just now getting ready for paint... 40 years after buying it and 30 years after taking it apart. (He paid $250 for it!) He had the wood built nearly 25 years ago. It spent decades wrapped in blankets in a closet.

Of course there are risks. When I was very young I used his seat springs as trampolines. Wasted them apparently...

His current projects include:

Ford '08 Model S unrestored
Ford '10 Model T totally restored
Oakland '13 Touring unrestored
Ford '32 Five Window Model B unrestored
Ford '32 Woody nearing completion
