Let\'s talk about garages....

Well, mine's just yer basic two-car with another car's worth of stuff in it... At least mama can get her car in it along with the Comet. Been thinking about epoxying the floor this summer though. Seems like concrete shows every bit of crap that falls on the floor. I do plan on getting some more wall cabinets up and am definitely gonna clear out some of this junk. Counted 3 cordless car vacumes this week, none of which worked. If you can swing the costs here's what I would add to your project.
Mount the grinder on a pedestal. That way your not giving up bench top space, and it could be moved anywhere in the garage.
Build an outhouse type of enclosure for the compressor that's outside of the garage. Again, this will not take up valuable floor space AND cuts down on the noise.
Any chance that sky lights could be added to the existing roof? They really brighten up the inside of a garage.
Can never have too many lights and electrical plugs. Better to have it done while the electrician is there the first time.
How about insulation and heat?
I really can help you spend your money Chilly.

That sounds like a plan! I am still waiting on my house to be finished. Nothing special, a 4 Room, 2 bath, and NO GARAGE! Just a carport. I will probaly just enclose the sides like you Chilly. While I will have no official garage for some time, I am happy to say my tool collection is growing! Take it easy and good luck with your project.

Hahaha!

You described my garage exactly!

I can't even get a car in our garage.

I have car covers over everything in the driveways so the City Inspector can't see what the hell is under them.

Sorry to hear that your single Chilly. If you have enough land, maybe you could buy a goat.

Let\'s talk about garages....

I just put a ceiling in my garage with 7/16 OSB. My garage is approximately 24'x36'(I think!) It cost about $350. That includes 4# of screws and 4 gallons of cheap-ass flat white paint. You could probably beat that since you live in an urban area, relatively speaking.
I have a window on the North and the doors on the South and the breeze I get is descent. Might considered putting in a window or two. New vinyl windows can be had for $200, but used windows are great for a garage and you can usually have them for free!
Some ideas: I pillaged an old mobile home and got the squirrel cage fan out of the AC unit. Put it on a stand and viola, mobile cooling!
I also got an old down-draft mobile home furnace for free and now I have a heated garage. Talk to a heating/cooling man and I bet you can get a similar deal. It saves him a trip to the dump and you get a heater out of the deal. Mine is wired to a toggle switch and I just flip it on when I know I'm in the garage. The plumbing for the gas and electric can be done when you are doing the walls. Black gas pipe isn't cheap, but its safer than copper. If you ever plan on putting a heater in the garage, route and plumb the pipe in now and just install a shut off valve and cap it. You can finish it up later.
Hope you get lots done. Stay out of the beer until you're about finished. If your friends are like mine, productivity goes way down when the beer comes out! Good luck.

Let\'s talk about garages....

Just finished buying a house myself. Signed the mortgage last night. Place has a very rundown building on it but that is coming down I think. My brother is a contracter and I will let him decide. Shop will be 24 x at least 32, 40 if the budget permits. I spend too much time at work to have it heated all the time. So I am planning to put an 8 x 10 room inside that I can heat with an electric register. Keep the good parts and the flow bench in there so I can play with stuff any time I want. Set up a really clean bench in there for assembling engines, trannies and whatever. Crank up the forced air if I want to use the rest of the shop.
I want one side to be long enough to back my open trailer in when I get home from the track. I race so often I usually do the quicky maintanence on the trailer. Unload to do the bigger jobs. Helps keep the tools and stuff in the trailer box protected.
