I\'ve had it, Fairlane for sale
I don't have the patience for the damn car anymore, everytime I fix something and take it for a cruise, something else goes wrong. Like today, I pulled into the garage to clean the carpet, and the damn thing won't start again. I was driving it not 2 hours before, I did not touch a damn thing, just cleaned the carpet. Same thing happened about a month ago. WTF!? Anybody want to add a Fairlane to their garage?

Take a big breath and think about when someone you know has a strange problem with their car and you'll go "Yeah I know what that is... Do this...." and they think youre a guru.
I have my car in getting some paintwork done at the present.
I drive it every day.
Brother in law (painter) rings me and says it wont start.
I go down and check every bit of wiring, change 2 batteries, replace relays you name it.
Finally I get under the car and pull the starter and try to bench start it. Nothing.
Starter has totally and utterly destroyed itself. It is two years old and is a gear reduction unit. Big bucks.
I start doing some checking and get advised "go back to the Ford original".
OK.. go to wrecker and get starter with solenoid on it. Get under car. Doesnt fit under exhaust headers. Time for that laugh now.
Bring back to wrecker and get non solenoid type and separate starter relay ala 60's style.
Bring home and test solenoid. No probs.
Test starter. Too much resistance and it wont kick the gear out. Insert another maniacal laugh here.
Tomorrow back to wrecker to get another one.
And so it goes.
But ask me anything about starters on 460s that are fitted to Aussie fords with Pacemaker headers and I can tell you.

Been there done the starter thing. Mine also came with a new battery.
Don't sell it, just let it sit for a while You'll cool off and the car will still be there. As long as you haven't lost interest in it don't sell it. They are all a big pain in the ass. My first screen name was JimmysPITA.
Never, never, never say the words, " I wish I hadn't sold that car." Watching someone else drive it (or worse, neglect or wreck it) is like being kicked in the balls. 'Specially the gut wrenching part.
I don't know how Greg does it, I couldn't put my sweat and blood into a car and watch someone drive off with it.

Don't do it, you'll feel better tomorrow. It's probably something simple and you will laugh later.

I agree with the others, just take a breath. Man, if we all had trouble free cars, life would be BORING!
Sure, some of the guys have cars that are just about trouble free but the idea of being a car nut is being able to work on our rides.
The symptoms your car is having could be minor, so give the guys here a chance to help you. You have been here long enough to know that some of the most FORD talented guys are on this site and everyone is here to help the other.
Remember when you bought the Fairlane? And how cool you felt driving the first time? Well my friend (and I mean that) the 'lane has been a part of you for a long time, just remember she's older than you and sure, there are going to be tough / bad times but you will keep her alive by being her best friend.

Ya just gotta keep at it & get away from it sometimes. If I had sold every car I was upset at, I'd be walkin'! I just usually go to a different project, take a fresh look at it, & find the answer is usually simple... but not always cheap! Hang in there

Whenever I get the "bug" to sell mine, I think about what I'd do with the money...( new carpet for the house, pay off credit cards,), then I realize that I wouldn't have squat to show for all that work. Actually the car was my father's, when he died it got passed to me when I was 15, then I slowly rebuilt it over the years.
I still have not figured out what the problem was, but I went to see what the hell was wrong with it, but it started right up this afternoon. I did by an Expedition last November, so I am not really worried about the car running or not, it's just a weekend type car now. But everytime I fix something or replace something, something else goes wrong. Oh well, I'll just put the car in the backyard and park it for a while.

I think that the best car advice my dad gave me is when you get pissed off, or upset, you just need to walk away from the project, and not look at it. Just go inside, and get away from it. When you cool off, go back to it. He told me if I stay out there with it while being pissed off, I will break something and end up with a pile of ****. I think that it has paid off a little. He told me that, and not to put a set time limit on it, because if it is not fixed by then, you will start getting mad, and soon discouraged, and mad some more. Before you kknow it, you have to walk off from it again making it take that much more longer.
Best of luck.
