Installing an Aftermarket CD player system in a 66 Mustang

I recently saw a 66 Stang with an aftermarket Alpine CD player deck custom installed in to the dash? My question is, does anybody know how he wire adapted it to his CD player? There are no wiring harnesses for this early model vehicle.

You have to wire it from scratch. Like you said, there are no wiring harnesses, you need to run new speaker wires (you don't really want to use the one speaker in the dash, do you?) and power and ground wires.

Thanx cougar!!! You seem pretty knowlegeable about systems!!! I'm not too familiar about wiring systems, where do you suggest I get new wiring from? If it seems like Im in desperation to figure this out, its because I really want to get a sound system in my stang. Are there any schematics I can go by?

the basic connections you will need to power the deck aka the cd player are, 12volt constent, a 12volt switched ie only on when the key is on and a good ground to the dash/frame/body. then it is only a matter of pluging in the radio antana nothing special there and running your speaker wires from the deck to where ever. you can look at wiring diagrams all you want but the fact that the wiring is so old the colors will not look the same and you would probly end up more confused then you started. If you realy want to see the diagrams for the dash I have some here somewhere and can post them for ya. i have a 65 stang with a sony deck, pioneer 6.5s in the kickpanels, pioneer 6x9s in the rear tray and two pioneer premier 10s in the trunk. all my speakers are running off of rockford fosgate amps and a power capacitor for those. If you need any help dont be affraid to ask. some one here will know what to do and If you think this is over your head then find a reputable stereo shop in your area, ie not a chain store. ask around.

Like my1st65 said, the diagrams won't do you any good, besides, you wouldn't want to use those wires anyway. They were for systems with a lot less power than modern systems. Just go to any store and buy braided (not solid) wire, probably something like 14 guage, maybe 12 if you really feel like it and you have a powerful deck. Hook main power wire to + post on solenoid, Acc wire to an acc switched location, and ground it to a piece of body somewhere. That's it. Then get a 50 ft roll or speaker wire, take off your sill plates and run two pairs of wire to the back (if you have rear speakers) and run wires to front speakers. Shouldn't take more than a couple hours. Good luck!

uhhhh, chain stores. i only like them because of their lower prices from selling in bulk. I recently got a CD player and bazooka amp and 2x10" subs for my 90 stang. I hooked up the amp my self cuz they wanted to charge me $60 to connect like 4 wires. i got it all hooked up and the amp was barely powering the speakers. i called up circuit city and they said it was clipping (overloading the amp with power) and they said to turn down the output of the amp and play around with the knobs. so i did, but no result. My friends dad came out and figured out the problem in a minute (he's an electrician). I didnt have the ground wire hooked up well enough so it wasnt able to complete all that great of a circuit. Definatly find a reputable stereo/electronic store.

I agree with the low prices of chain stores, it is the install I wouldnt trust them with. Some of the things I have seen them do to friends stereos makes me think that a group of trained monkeys could do better. But as with anything decide on what you want then shop around for the best price.

I hooked the radio in my 66 mustang up to my car alarm. I can turn on and off my radio from over 200 feet away. It surprises people when they are walking next to your car (windows rolled down) and the radio starts blairing. You can get a few people to jump

If you're concerned about prices, check the internet.

www.cbrstereo.com
www.thezeb.com
www.woofersetc.com

I've bought some stuff from these guys and have had great service from them. If the HU is powerful, you might want to run the constant power wire staright from the battery.

I have a Sony AM/FM/CD in my '69. Like the previous posts indicated, you cannot use any of the original wiring, nor should you. It is really simple to do the wiring, just follow the diagrams that come from with your CD. You may need to do a little fabricating to make it fit properly without tearing up the dash. But it looks and sounds good. Now if only I could graft an A/C unit in as easy.....
Good luck!
