Upholstery prices and experiences

Now that my car is back from the body shop and looking beautiful (yes, pictures are coming as soon as I can figure out the digital camera), I want to actually finish the thing. Need to get it to an upholsteror for a full interior. Front buckets, rear bench, headliner and door panels. I am going to go for a tuck and roll look.

Anyone know what kind of prices are reasonable for vinyl, and what kind of shop I should look for? Any other experiences or advice in this area would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Headliners are usually 295-400 installed. Seats run $400 for benches, around $300 each for buckets.

Sickening isn't it? I had a catalog from Macs or somebody sent to my dad that covered 48 fords. When I saw him last summer he asked me if I knew the prices on the premade seat covers and I said not on the '48. I think he was looking at the original mohair type material and it was probably about 3-400 more than for my 64 as his would be a kit with everything included and I would have to buy the bucket seat padding and all seperate. Think I need to get into the upholstery business. Then again, maybe not. I can't even sew patches on my husbands' uniforms without choice words and the sewing machine screwing up!

I had a local guy do the buckets and the back seat in the Falcon. Two colors of cloth and it was $400 for the whole thing. I did my own headliner.

That's encouraging Chris. How tough was the headliner, and do you think vinyl would make a significant difference in price?

No bad. Took about 4 hours to get it done. The "secret" was to get two or three boxes of those black spring report clips at the office supply store. I had the back glass out at the time which helped a lot and it just hooks under a trim piece in the front. I started in the center and worked in both directions. The spring clips let you clamp it every few inches so you can work a smaller area. Once the 3M stuff takes a set, you can start removing clips and doing final trimming.

I did a headliner once…. it’s tough, you need two people and a day to do it right (if you don’t do it regularly) IMO.

I did my own interior; the seat covers were ordered on line (can get website if your interested), they ran me $250.00 Front & Back pleated Vinyl. I calculated and ordered additional material to make up the door panels. I made the door panel backing out of similar weight & thickness pressboard that I found in Home Depot (very inexpensive) and used the existing backing (that was warped over time) as a template. Next I picked up “batting” which is a soft material (any fabric store) that goes on the panel first, then the vinyl material. Sprayed the door handles correct color matching dye…, and the chrome stripe on the door is from a autobody paint supply store (flexable, chrome plated …basically a bumper guard type of material)
Cost about $375.00, No headliner…Carpet was another $180.00, Soundproofing was carpet liner (Home Depot)….again…not very orthodox, but it looks good because I took my time covering the seats…and constructing the Door Panels.

3 cans of 3m Spray Adhesive

..oh yea...the package try is Home Depot too! Came out great! Just painted the 1/8th pressboard black.

My Door Panels do NOT look factory, but they look period correct and resemble the original look.

That sounds good. I'm going to try to do the door panels and package tray myself. Maybe the headliner also now. Thanks.
