Advice For Buying A New Truck..

Any pointers or haggling tips would be good(never bought from a dealership before).. The lady and I have decided on getting a new or possibly a used 4x4 extended cab F-150(getting rid of the stratus) Anyway, we have decided on putting down 5 grand as a down payment and already talked with the dealerships in town(already having salesmen calling us everyday!!) But we are planning on heading to phoenix within 2 weeks to talk and see what we can see.... Or would the 'I know Greg Cook' scheme work??

I've always been told to ask for the Fleet Manager -- he will give you the best price, since any sales agent has to go to him for price approval. Also, i've heard to tell him you are going to pay $500 above his cost for the vehicle. If he okays to this, ask for his paperwork to prove it.
When I got my 2002 F150 4 DOOR EXT 4.6L. I didn't try any of this.

When I walked onto the lot, the salesman came up to me. I had a set price I was going to pay, as I knew what I could afford. I told the sales man, you are not going to screw me. Basically, after 9 hours of haggling with him (he finally got the point) I got my truck for $20,000 ($23,000 after taxes, warranty, etc etc). This is roughly $6500 off of MSRP. Not bad for a brand new truck.

Be prepared to say NO! It is terribly hard to say no to all the nice new vehicles they show you. If they can't give you what you want, go to another dealership.

Did you pack a lunch? I usually get fed up after 2 hours and leave.

They Fed me. LOL.. One of the reasons why I did stay so long was because at the time, my boss was paying the down payment ($2500) and he wouldn't go any real distance to pay for it...

They hate when you walk out on them also. When we were looking at a truck and not much of a down payment. We had a max payment amount we wanted to pay. We found the truck we wanted which was a demo with 5k on the odometer and they were wanting to get rid of it. They didn't come down to our payment amount so we left. Couple days later they called saying they had our payment price we wanted. Got there and it was 200.00 over what we said. We listened to the bs of how many cents per day it was for the payment and all that and told them forget it, they send in another guy with the same line of bull, we started to leave twice and then they say, well let me see if I can get a higher trade, let me see what I can do etc. Finally they came within 50.00 of our payment we wanted and we got the truck. So keep threatening to leave and they'll keep juggling the numbers.

Expect to give them your trade for free, you're better off selling it to someone else, even if it was a Ford. All they do is send it to the auction. I don't know about your state but here you can get a used dealer to get you something at the auction. I went last night & there were several late model trucks, including a 2002 F-350 that were cheap! The 2002 was a loaded diesel & sold for $9800. If you buy new tell them you want them to give you the extended warranty for free or do free service for 1 year. Any way you look at it, buy new & you'll get bent over.

When I bought my 02, we were able to use the X-plan. It was the smoothest way I have ever bought a vehicle. I looked at a ton of used ones, and everyone wanted damn near as much as what I paid for a new one. I know that doesn't help ya much. But if somehow you can get someone to call you there brother, the X-plan or A-plan, elimanates all the BS.

I have used the Edmunds book for years. They can be purchased at most book stores and they have a web site. They list dealers cost for all new cars and trucks. They start with the base models and then add the options. I found that the window sticker matched the Edmonds book to the cent, so the dealer cost was right on also. Dealers make their $ on volumn and time the vehicle isn't on the lot. I bought my last three new fords for between 100 and 300 over dealers cost. At least it will give you a starting point. Good Luck, and Don't them wear you down.
