Degrease an engine and trans

Just picked up a 5.0 engine and tranny and while it's on the back of my pickup want to take to the car wash and clean it up. Anybody have any kinds of "solutions" that will help cut the grease? Thanks

The old Gunk used to work pretty well, but I've cleaned the last couple engines with cans of brake cleaner. It's cheap and really cuts to the iron.
Just watch your eyes. Hosed mine when the stream from the can caught a crevice in the block and shot right back into my eyes. Wear safety glasses and/or have water handy for wash outs.

Autozone has this purple degreaser that seems to work pretty well, can't remember exacly what its called tho. It washes off with water. Comes in a gallon size.

I just remembered, it's called Coastal Powerclean.

Yeah, I used to use Gunk in the "old" days also, but it seemed to work best on a warm engine. Not the case here (it's cold). Got a price of $40.00 from a detailing shop, but that could be a lot of brake clean.

Castrol Superclean seems to work well. You still will want to bang on it with some wire (or bristle) brushes. Don't breath the mist either.

Thanks for the Autozone info kman, however none around here, just Advance Auto and Pep Boys. I'll write the name of the product down and inquire.

Coastal has a web page, might be able to find out if there is an outlet where you live:

Castrol Superclean works well, and Easy Off oven cleaner works wonders, just keep it off the aluminum stuff.

Degreaser, Oven Cleaner ... Screwdriver and Putty knife to scrape ... Wire Brush to scub ... and make sure you have plenty of time and quarters

BTW ... I like the oven cleaner on the aluminum best ...

Once you get the thick stuff off the oven cleaner is great for finishing off the last bit of scum.
