Anybody use TIVO...????

Wifes VCR took a crap a while ago... She wants something to tape her shows with... But VCR quality really sucks.... So I do not want to buy another VCR.... I have been looking at TIVO for some time now.... Just wondering if anyone has any real world experiances with TIVO... Do you like it or not????? Is it worth the monthly fee?????

Any input or thoughts are welcome... Good or Bad, let me hear your thoughts....

Thanks, Billy

I have Tivo. It is one of the best inventions, ever. My wife and I use it every day. I haven't seen a commercial in months since we've had TIVO. We have a DIRECTV/Tivo combo receiver. I highly recommend it. Tivo by itself is OK, but I prefer the integrated package.

As far as the monthly fee, it's minimal for the amount of time it saves. VHS quality is really bad. Tivo quality is great. You can save shows indefinitely, archive them to VHS or DVD, or you can delete them after you view them. I work in the television and entertainment industry so I keep tabs on a lot of programming. I never have to worry about working late or adjusting my schedule around what's on TV because I setup everything in advance to record.

You can even setup an entire season of a show to record.

The ability to "pause live TV" is really a great function. You don't realize how often this comes in handy until you're at somebody's house that doesn't have the feature! It is worth every penny! The wife will love it.

Thanks erlong, that is what I wanted to hear... I have talked with some people over the last few days... I think I am going to get one.... I want one with a built in dvd recorder though, so I can save to dvd-r also.... Just dont want the hassle of hacking a tivo and then networking it to the computer so I can burn dvd's.... This is the unit I am looking at getting....

I have Directv also and love it.... It is awsome....

Thanks again for the input, Billy

DT, Get rid of the cable and get Directv, It Rocks.... Way better picture... I dont know how big a tv you got, but the bigger tvs really show how bad cable sucks..... Directv looks way better, even on a big screen tv....

Oh yeah, almost forgot..... Tivo is not a cable or satalite provider.... Tivo gives you the ability to record your tv programs in dvd quality..... VHS JUST SUCKS.... The quality blows compared to dvd anymore.... Tive units have built in hard drives like a computer and it stores the tv programs on the hard drive for you to watch later.... Tivo does alot more also... If you get a phone call e.t.c., you can pause live tv and the start right from were you left off, becouse your tivo is recording the rest of the show for you.....

The unit I am looking at also has a dvd burner in it.... I would be able to burn my tv programs to dvd's.... I have a dvd burner in my computer but I dont want the hassle of hacking the tivo unit and then networking it with my computer and then burning disks.... All in one unit will just be easier....

Here is a link to Tivo

I personaly don't care for Tivo after reading an article in the newspaper about the spyware it has, It monitors what you watch.

I don't have TiVo, but I heard it will record shows that it thinks you would like, based on what you have been watching.

If they are monitoring what I watch so they can provide me better service, I'm all for it. It's a similar concept as the use of cookies on a website. The time saved and the convenience of knowing I can watch my favorite shows on my own time is really nice.

Monthly cost is about $10, I believe. It's all bundled in with my DIRECTV monthly bill. The Tivo+DVD combo would be a dream come true. I have a bunch of shows saved on my Tivo for when I get a DVD burner. Can't wait.

As for as DIRECTV vs. cable. Locally here in Minnesota, there are 3 big cable providers. I've had service on all three after having lived in different areas of the twin cities. Some of them are starting to implement their own Digital Video Recorders (Tivo-like service), but the features, quality, and the intuitiveness of the interface just don't compre to DIRECTV. DIRECTV and Tivo interfaces just make sense...they are fast, and they are easy to look at.

I was always concerned with the satellite droping out during heavy storms...I have seen it happen before, but it has yet to happen since we've had DIRECTV. I would go with it over digital cable, and certainly regular cable, any day.

TIVO will fundamentally change the way you watch TV.

I no longer care when new episodes are on, heck I don't even actually know when most of my stuff is on anymore.

You sit down when you have time, and watch whatever you want to watch. And skip all the commercials

Why get TiVo when you can get the Dish equiliant. My parents have it and they love it. DirecTV and Dish are the same company, but you do not have to pay a monthly subscription fee.
