I think the laws should reflect purely safety and well being of others and religion shouldn't even be a factor. If someone wants to do whatever and the only thing that is harmed by it is the person, then they should let that be. If it comes to harming another person/place/thing (not just physical, but financial etc.) then it should be illegal. Religious laws should never be forced on society because there is no religion that everyone agrees with. The problem with current gay marriage/union situation is that it puts the same-sex couples at a disadvantage. If you are not married you cannot get several things: Tax benefit, health, etc. I think there should be some alternative even if it is not called 'marriage' or if people are so against it, they should get rid of all the benefits for people who are married. Why should a certain group of people get more benefits because they happen to believe some religion when another group doesnt? Why is polygamy outlawed when it is expressly allowed in the Mormon 'Doctrines and Covenants'? There are quite a few internal conflicts with religious texts as well. I just think you shouldn't prevent people from doing things just because it is against your beliefs. They aren't hurting anyone so just let it be.

Gay Marriage
I think we should let the homos marry as normal folks. Yes, the Bible tells us that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, but it's not really an issue of separation of church and state. In case many have not noticed, there is no "real" separation of church and state at all. When you take the stand in court, you put your right hand on the Bible and swear that you will tell the truth, so help you God. Our money has "In God We Trust" stamped/printed on it. The pledge of allegiance speaks of the Man above, and so does our own Constitution. While I do not agree with their lifestyle, I feel that if they want to commit one more sin, let them. The bible is many things, and one of the most important is that it supplies us a set of morals to go by. Take religion and the Bible from the country, and we start to lose our moral values (already been done many times).
Besides, if 2 guys are married, they won't be hitting on hetero guys like me! Nothing pisses me off more than a gay guy trying to start something.
That's fine if homos want to marry, at least it is with me.

Gay Marriage
It's interesting to note that nobody has mentioned what a marriage really consists of.....a legally binding contract between two consenting people of legal age. In actuality, it's not really any different that two people signing a contract to go into business together. The only religious aspect of a marriage is what the two people marrying agree to include in theirs. Athiests can legally marry without any religious connotation whatsoever. As to family members not being able to marry, the laws on the books are for the protection of any children that might result from such a union. Strangely, California does (or did) allow second cousins to marry. I know this for a fact because a close family friend's sister and her second cousin married in California in the early '50s. They went out there because it's illegal to do so in Ohio.
Just stating some facts,
Jan
