Obviously you have never worn a hockey glove, give me a bare fist any day. LOL
This is one of those incidents that happens every few years in hockey and gets everyone to do some soul searching about violence in hockey. Bertuzzi's apology is being seen as crocidile(sp) tears though and his suspension was harsh by hockey standards.
The level of brutality in the attack and the extensive injuries that resulted will be more of a deterrent that the punishment.

Looked a little bloody but didn't appear to be much I haven't seen before... just the wrong place, the wrong time, & hit just right. Seems to me from a dumb Okie it goes with the territory.

Then I suppose the gloves I wore were the american version In anycase, give me the hockey glove any day than a bare fist. I met Stu Grimson (was the Ducks 'bruiser' and his knuckles were so huge they would have covered my entire face! Looked like he had apples for knuckles.
besides, if the gloves hurt so much more, why are they the first to come off in a fight? They are out there swinging to hurt the other when they are fighting!

It's funny how the people with the loudest opinions are often the ones who know the least about hockey. Considering the hit itself, the suspension is actually pretty harsh. But, considering the circumstances, I wasn't at all surprised. Plus, I'm not a huge Bertuzzi fan to begin with and I was pretty pissed off when I saw the hit, so I don't mind him getting hit with a big suspension. Although I do wonder how much all of this media attention had to do with the length of his suspension.
As much as I hate to sound like I'm defending what Bertuzzi did, I want to clarify something. Bertuzzi didn't sneak up behind Moore. Moore knew Bertuzzi was there becuase Bertuzzi was trying to fight him face to face and Moore wouldn't fight. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Moore was just waiting for Bertuzzi to take a shot at him so Bertuzzi would get a penalty. Unfortunately instead of skating away like he should have, Bertuzzi socked him from behind.

Let's just hope Moores ok afterwards and can play his game.
Let get to the real bad thing of hockey. ICING..... How many have seen guys go crashing into the boards to get the puck to get the icing. Alot of players have gone on the injured list or ended career's cuz of that. Breaking ankles, legs, concussions, etc. More injuries from icing then fighting. Don Cherry did a great speal on Coaches Corner a few weeks ago about it, also goalies have to stay in there net. If a golaie goes behind the net to get a puck and the other team goes and nudges him, he gets a penalty for goalie interference, very lame.

Sorry Jeff, that was more directed to some of the original posts in this thread. And in a broader sense it's exactly how a lot of hockey fans, no matter how much they hate what Bertuzzi did, feel about all of the media attention this is getting. All of these columnists and TV reporters who have never played hockey, rarely if ever watch hockey and had no idea who Todd Bertuzzi was a couple weeks ago are now suddenly experts on violence in hockey. Like I said, nobody is condoning the hit but I don't want hockey's rules to be decided by a bunch of people trying to sell newspapers and airtime.
Oh and to answer your question about gloves versus bare hands, here's my take on it. Yes, when you're fighting a guy a bare hand is going to hurt his face more and draw more blood, but Bertuzzi didn't hit Moore in the face, he hit him in the helmet and if he had punched Moore's helmet with his bare hand he probably would have hurt his own hand more than anything. Plus, remember how big Stu Grimson's hands were. Imagine how big his gloves are, so when you have a huge hand and an even bigger glove there's a fair amount of mass there. Then imagine a 245 lb angry Canadian swinging it. From the replays you can see that Moore was pretty much out after the initial punch, so it must have been pretty hard.
Hey Rick, I agree. I played all of my minor hockey with no touch icing and it doesn't take anything away from the game. But unfortunately 'icing the puck' doesn't make for good headlines and highlight reels like a nice sucker-punch and dogpile do, so for now we're stuck with a bunch of anti-fighting BS.

Newest drama in the hockey world.
Guys,
I have watched some hockey and been to a few games, but I don not follow each team and the rivalries. I guess you would call me a casual fan. I do know what I saw. Had the attack produced nothing more than a few scapes and bruises, I am sure nothing would have been said. The fact is, this attack produced a broken neck. It may not have been intended, but the broken neck is still there. A broken neck is a split hair's distance from death. If Bubba and myself get into a fist fight and no one calls the cops, the we usually each go home with bruises. If one of us accidentally causes major injory (broken neck), the other of us will likely be charged with malicious wounding. If one of us kills the other..unintentionally, the other will be charged with either murder or with manslaughter. Fighting is part of the entertainment in Hockey. Guys have got to think a bit first though. To basically tackle a guy from behind the way this occurred is just asking for serious injury and for serious penalties. Even if the one player knew the other was behind him, that does not excuse the attacker. He STILL attacked when the guy's back was to him. That is cowardly in my book. If a guy doesn't want to fight, then you have to back off. No, I do not know everything about hockey. I enjoy watching live hockey when the opportunity presents itself. Just because I cannot name every player in the league does not mean I can't tell a reprehensible act when I see it. For those of you inclined to disagree, put on a hockey uniform and let some guy attack you from behind breaking your neck in the process. THEN tell me how right your attacker was, and that he should just be suspended for a couple games.

I agree he F'd up getting him from behind. Breaking his neck was a freak accident, but he still F'd up. I honestly dont think it broke from hitting him. I think it happened when his face went driving into the ice and all the guys jumped on him, but I could be wrong.
I used go to alot of the Kamloops Blazers games, but havent for awhile
