Door panel ideas...

It's not too early to start thinking about the interior of the 'liner so I thought I'd throw out some samples for you guys. I'd LOVE to go back to original on my ride, but at $850 and more for just door panels (from Just Dashes), I decided I'd go the street rodder route, besides, this I can do myself. Give me your thoughts...Door panels...

I like the traditional or the classic for the seats. The one that has the same pattern on the door panel makes me think cowboy seats in a truck. But colors would change that. I like the curve or cruiser w/stich on the door panels. Too bad they didn't have the curve for the seats also.

I saw a 49 Merc in MD and never got close to it but saw the pics of the interior in the shop that did the work and the whole seat was 2 tone, turquoise and white with turquoise being a kind of flame pattern that covered the full seat on each side, unlike the flame one they had in the picture that was centered. It doesn't sound like it would look good but to see it, it looks great. The car was a light turquoise with pink ghost flames, chopped and lowered. Sure wish we had gotten there a couple minutes sooner so I could have gotten a look at the real thing.

Go for Standard Stitch panels and Classic seat upholstery. It's very hard to beat the classic look on these old cars in my opinion.

I will even put my neck out and state that I see a LOT of beautiful old cars wherein the owner has drained every last bit of an old car's "oldness" from it, loading it up with so much stuff from new cars you can't find the "old" anymore, the character, and I wonder why they went to all that trouble to begin with when they could have just bought some cheesy late model Camaro.

FX, it's not hard to make your own panels if you wanted to try. All you need is some thin masonite or MDF for the backing and if you wanted to add an armrest or something in there to break up the flatness you can use expanding foam that's been hardened and cut/sand it into shapes and attach it, or you can even use fiberglass & built up MDF pieces to get the shapes you want. The hardest part is putting material on there and even that isn't too tough if you've got good adhesive & a heat gun for stretching vinyl.

I'll end up making all new panels for my Galaxie someday.. I don't even have a drivers panel for mine at all and the rest of them are pretty darn sad. I've already made custom kick panels up front to house a component speaker set.. had to move the high/low beam switch & loose the factory e-brake stuff but it looks good. I'm gonna add a different e-brake setup on some kind on there, the original was completely gone other than the inside pedal.

If you want to check out some different materials.. vinyl, tweed, fiberglass, and even carbon fiber supplies go to www.selectproducts.com

I missed most of it but was watching some car show where they were showing how to do the door panels with
the 'ridges'. It was pretty cool. Just some 1" foam or so and cut grooves into it where the 'tuck' would be and they kinda glued one wrung at a time and used what i called a pizza cutter only more like a roller like those old 'wheel' pencil erasers and ran that up and down the groove as they worked their way over each hump. Was pretty cool.
Here they are making seats and sewing in the seams with backing material but still can give a person an idea I would think.

Thanks for all the tips, folks. I already have the "bases" for the panels and the links were to a company that makes the material that you mount to the panel. As stated, it's not hard to mount these presewn panels to your mounting board.
