Lost my job...
Well yesterday I was 'fired' from my craptacular job. It was a fun job at Radio Shack, the pay sucked but it was fun. I liked the people I worked with and all.
In any case, a new manager came in about a week or two ago. He's only been with the company for about two months and knows absolutely nothing about the products or how to run the store. He was always calling other managers to ask what to do, and seemed angry when I noticed and would tell him how to do whatever it was he was trying to do.
His second day on the job I yelled at him pretty darn good because I heard through the grapevine that he wasn't gonna give a good buddy of mine who had just got a better job his vacation pay he had left. The only reason my budddy didn't take his vacation time was because it woulda meant we woulda been very understaffed and it woulda been stressful for everyone else to cover for him that much. In the end he got ****ed over by this new guy.
So anyway, I've been about 5 minutes late some days because the new manager doesn't want to take the security bars off the back door (he's afraid of the LP guy yelling at him, and someone breaking down the back door without anyone in the store noticing it, yeah right), and it takes me a good 4-5 minutes to walk around the building from the back. There's no way in hell I'm parking the Galaxie in the big lot out front with all them shopping carts, unprotected for 8-11 hours. Because the new manager is an ass, I decided I'll be at work right on time, and if he doesn't un-bar the back doors, well, he'll jsut be upset then and I won't care. He was upset every time I was late, but never said anything to me after asking why I was late and my response was it takes 5 minutes to walk around the building.
This new manager didn't like the 'crew' very much, except the new guy who has been with us for almost a month. The rest of us he didn't like much, but me in particular because I knew that and of course anything he would say about any of us in private would be told to the others. After all, we're all friends. Upper management has been ranting and raving about getting rid of the experienced employees (sales associate and managers) and hiring all new staff, the idea being that they will have to pay them less. They want to keep rotating new people in. That's why I've been with the company a good 8 months now and the new manager has only been with the company for two months.
You wouldn't believe how much Radio Shack rapes people. Batteries... Watch batteries cost the store $.25 but go for $3, a 4 pack of AA costs us something like $.50 but sells for $4. Cell phone leather cases cost $5, sell for $30. It's all overpriced out the wazoo. They make a hell of a profit off all that stuff, and then have the nerve to fire people to hire in new staff to pay them less. Damn the experienced employees and damn the customers who benefit from someone who knows what they are doing.
Speaking of which, the new guys excuse for firing me was that I was nearly 20 minutes late yesterday. Well, he's got me there. There's 2 spots of construction on my way to work so I have to take two detours. I left about 10 minutes early yesterday so I wouldn't be late for work. Well it just so happens that there's another construction site along one of the detours and no way to avoid it. So I sat in traffic for a good 10-15 minutes. **** happens, that's life. I knew before I even got to work that he was gonna fire me.
So I get there and just wait for it. When it comes I just wait until he gets angry. So he starts yelling. I Just smile, and calmly tell him exactly what I think of him and how he thinks of and treats his experienced and knowledgeable employees. I loved the look on his face when I told him that. Handed him my keys and walked out the door.
The part that pisses me off is that for the past week I've been training my replacement and I had a feeling that's what it was. As it stands he's still got too many people working for him to have everyone get full time hours for their benefits, so I've got a feeling someone else is gonna go once the new guys are trained better.
Now that I think of it I think this guy is so cheap taht he now had a urgency to fire me before I took my two weeks paid vacation starting next week.
Anyway, I'm apparently the prime candidate so far for this awesome IT consulting job I interviewed for last week. They are done interviews Thursday so I'll know if I have it Friday.
Next week I leave for my vacation up to Maine. I'll probably be cutting that short if I get this new job, but if not I'm just gonan go uop and enjoy myself. I think I will be tying the secondaries on my carb closed though. I seriously want to try to save some money, so I'm gonna tie 'em closed before I leave. It's a 460 mile trip each way, which is a lot of 93 octane at 15-15.5 MPG. I figure I cna get maybe 17 with the secondaries tied shut. I figure that'll save me maybe $20 if I'm lucky. That's that much more driving or other fun stuff I can afford to do while I'm up there. Oh well, I'm not sweatin' it. If worse comes to worst I'll go pump gas and make more than I did at the Shack until I find a better job. After all, I got bills to pay (plastics make it possible, eh?) and need a job when I get back from vacation.
Alright, I'm through venting... Off to the junkyard I go...

Lost my job...
he said, "craptacular". TeeHeeHee...that's a good one. I've had the pleasure of training a number of managers that were moved in to be my boss. Sure it's kind of a pain when all your "at-a-boys" get wiped away, but I look at it as a positive challenge to get some new ones with the new boss. I've always understood that one sure fire way to be successful is to do everything I can to make my boss successful. Kinda reminds me of one of those old sayings my Grandmother used to share, "You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar". You put your attitude on every day just like your shirt and pants. I hope you get that IT consultant job, but one thing is for sure...you better straighten out your damn attitude. If some cocksure smart-ass IT consultant comes into my office to tell me how stupid I am, I'm gonna kick his ass right out...and fire his consulting company from my companies pay-roll.
Good luck with the job search...I pray your unemployment is short.

Sorry to hear that. From what I read, it's typically RS manager tactics. You didn't really want to be there, so you gave him an excuse. You don't fire people for being late unless it some daily thing. If the vacation is accrued per company policy, they have to pay you for it. You are not required to give notice and neither is the company so don't let them cry about 2 weeks this and that. If he give you grief, tell him you'll speak to an employment lawyer, the EEOC AND the local paper. Then call his DM and tell him/her sweetly that you'd like to just get what is owed to you without having to make a stink but your manager is not being very cooperative. That should put Mr. Manager on the griddle for at least a minute.

Lost my job...
Here's my point, I'm sure I'll catch crap for it. First, there's no excuse for being late, I'm 46 & have never been late for anything, period. Second, my boss is 16 years younger than I & has NO experience in my field, he is my boss nonetheless... this makes the yelling insubordination. He constantly proves himself incapable of management but he is the boss. Hope you find something in a line of work you prefer, sales is a tough job even with a good boss.

When one door is slammed shut, others are opened.
This may be one of the best things that has ever happened to you my friend when you look back on it later in life.

I guess the $10-$20 in gas is a moot point... I'm not that poor, just thinking about if I get to that point. On that note, I think the whole driving the Galaxie up to Maine may be a moot point... Bad things have happened...

You really get mad about the back door being locked and having to walk 5 minutes to the front
damn your lazy
I work at lots of hospitals, talk about a parking pain in the butt. Some days I cant see the hospital I park so far away. Maybe if you had to go to work with me you'd be glad about being able to park that close to work.

Wow, I can't believe how many of you are ragging on him for standing up for himself against an ******* boss. I don't care if the person is my boss or not, if someone is going to treat me like **** then I'm not going to stand by and let them do it... unless I'm in an extremely good mood and it doesn't really get to me.
Personally, I'd hate having some new unexperienced guy coming in and telling me what to do. Maybe that's just me... and adgdghr.

Amen! I can name about 15 occasions where something has happened, but it worked out for the best.
