\"Project Sleeper\" update

Well, it's been a while since I did one of these. Car is running great, tinkering with things here and there, sorting out some stuff, dealing with other things with the car. This is what I've got planned for later this year, I will try to finish these goals but some may get delayed till next year sometime depending on time, money and my willingness to get the job(s) started.

I've been looking into the rear end swap more the last day or two. I went to see someone at a jobber place I deal with at work and I've got him involved in finding the key item needed for me to start the explorer rear end swap into my granada, a master cylinder that will work with my stk frt brakes and with the rear disc setup that the rear end has from the 2002 explorer. He seems to feel that a master from a 1975 Lincoln Continental will fit the stk booster and work the brakes properly once I add an adjustable proportioning valve to dial in the rear brakes. If the master is the one to use I'll be contacting the shop that I've been talking to about getting the rear axle assy in and see if he has the time to do it in the coming months.

To complement the new rear leaf springs I got installed earlier this spring, I've been checking PST's website looking at a frt end rebuilding kit. I need to find out a bit more about the kit they offer for a Maverick since they don't really list a kit for a Granada but I've heard the parts are basically the same between the two cars. I did a topic about this in tech. I'll be heading to the states on holidays in 3 weeks time and if the kit is the same I just might be bringing it back home with me tax and duty free. "PS" will be handling quite a bit better if I get the frt end redone.

This next thing might happen before the axle assy goes on the car. I've been eyeing a set of 15x10" AR-767 steel wheels for the rear of the car. These are like "stock car" looking wheels from American Racing. I have a set of 4 already on the car 15x7" but the 10" wide versions will fill in the rear wheelwells quite nicely. For rubber it'll probably be a pair of 275/50/15 tires mounted on those rims.

My Crane dizzy is on its way to sunny Florida (shipped it out yesterday) back to Crane to get checked out. I await the news from them as to the reason why it's not working the way that it should.

More on the above upgrades as they become avail.

Tony

Outstanding Tony. You've got the right idea for that car. I wonder though, if those wheels will still help out the sleeper feel? Pictures please!

HankyJ, you've seen the car before nothing has changed much on the outside since I got the 408W going last year. The wheels will be exactly the same as what's on there now only the rears will fill in the wheelwell space a lot better with those 15x10" once I get them. Here's the latest pic I have on the car shortly after the leafs were installed in the spring:

The wheels are still the 15x7" AR-767's on all four corners.

I believe it's a late 80's aluminum master cylinder from a Dodge truck that most of the aftermarket brake companies sell as 'their' aftermarket brake master cylinder.

Maybe someone else can verify this.

Good Luck!

Oh of course! I've seen that car before. It really does sleep. That's the way I like them. I would love to see the face of the guy next to you when you leave him in the dust.

By the way, what kind of hub caps do you have? They look very simple, which is what I want for my car. I've got black painted steelies, and I'm thinking of just chrome lug nuts for them or a "spider cap" type dealy.

Those are just the caps that fit the 767 wheels from AR. They go through the wheel from behind so they won't fly off or get pryed off from someone wanting them. You have to take the wheel off to get them off from the car.

I don't remember the part # of them right now. I'll take a look later and post here.

Picked up the MC today. Holy crap the thing's massive. It's a new fenco #NM1603. Got home and eyeballed it to the stk one. It will bolt up to the booster but I'm going to have to do some modifying, adapting and overcoming to get it between the back of the shock tower and the booster. If I have to would cutting a hole or beating out the shock tower a bit at the back be okay to get the master installed? Would I be jeopardizing the structural safety of that area by doing the above or would I be able to get away with it? From me eyeing it I don't think I need to modify the shock tower too much, I might even be able to slightly dremel the most forward part of the master cyl to get it to fit once I'm ready to do the rear end swap.

HankyJ, here's the centre cap that my ARE wheels use:

They'll work on those 15x10" wheels too when I get them.
