Replacement VIN tags?

Hey guys. Maybe you can help one of the admins out with what seems to be some shady activity. I've got an old Torino that was gifted to me but it never had a dashpad or pan. So, there is no metal VIN tag. The VIN on the frame and door jam match but I put a dash pan in from another car. I need that tag to match. Where can I get one of these or am I getting myself into trouble.

Thanks,
Jon

If it's driveable and registerable "As Is"

I'd go to DMV with what you got ... explain/show them there is no dash VIN ...

If they have the door and frame markings they should be fine with it ...

Then let them tell you how to deal with the "lack" of dash tag.

I think am more concerned about the value of the car. I have no intention of selling it, but it's nice to know you can get 10 or 15K for it if you absolutely have to liquidate.

I wonder if that would be the same thing as putting a new cab on a pickup? Seems like in that case you had to have the title to the frame but not the cab or something like that. I know my sister went through that but not sure what was required.

My input says that you only need buy a 3/16" stamp kit and duplicate the numbers and letters and place them over the tag on the new dash pad. Or take it out first and make it the same size, be sure to get "reversed stamps" (the numbers on a vin tag are "raised" so you need the letters and numbers to appear correct when you tilt it up and look at the stamping portion), then with a little practice..... you can get it perfect and make your own replacement tag.

Another thought. This doesn't guarantee the same type style does it? Are these kits standardized in terms of type style. I'm just thinking of that funny looking "8" they used on the tag for my 72.

I must apologise... I was stuck in a moment of the Pillipines from my days of old... I hope y'all weren't offended. It roughly translates to I hope you can do it, and that it brings you joy and happiness for many seasons, and they may be expensive to play with but it sure is fun! hehehe
