2001 F250 Super Duty w/ V10
We're trading in the Silverado 2500 (dont' even get me started on that P.O.S.) for a 2001 F250 Super Duty, auto, V10 6.8L, 4wd, XL, Regular Cab, tow package, and 80,000 miles for about 15,000. Before we made the deal (Tommorow), I was kinda curious about everybody's opinion on the V10, and what kinda gas mileage it'd get (not expecting much).
We're using it to tow a horsetrailer and will probably get a car dolly/tow bar as well to tow all our other cars. The V10 isn't necessary, a 5.4 could probably handle it, but the truck isn't a bad deal.

The V10 is strong but likes to use the fuel. The price is right though. Have you looked at any Powerstrokes?

the V10 is a strong engine, but as W8 mentioned, likes fuel. Usually gets about 10-12 mpg, 6-8 loaded most times. Some have gotten as much as 15, but it must have been downhill with a 50 mph wind at their back. Have seen several of them apart at the local machine shops..almost identical to a 5.4 (at first glance I couldn't tell it wasn't a 5.4) with 2 more cylinders. Changing plugs is a bear, but workable if you have the right tools. Other than that, you'll be pleased. Great trucks, great engine. Worlds ahead of a Silverado for sure!
W8, I was in the market too for a 3/4 ton pickup...wanted a 7.5 up to '96, couldn't find one, started looking at the PSD's. Expen$ive! Cant touch one ('98-later) here for under $25,000 no matter how many miles its got on it. Maybe prices will come down now that diesel is over $2.30/gal and gas is $1.80.
But, if you can get the oil burner, you'll really like it. Better power/torque and mileage. Bad part is, maintenance sucks....holds something like 3 gallons of oil, plus a $20.00 oil filter, expensive fuel filters, etc.

2001 F250 Super Duty w/ V10
I have a 2002 F250 4x4 Extended Cab V-10 3.73 rear.
I LOVE THIS TRUCK.
I have gotten 11.6mpg overall average. Which is better than my 93 with a 351W and 3.55 rear. Big difference is OD. At 70mph it is at 2000rpm. The 01 might have a lower horse rating. I know they upped it at some point, but I'm not sure when. My 02 is rated at 310hp and 425 lbs/ft. Lots of balls. I left a Trans Am at a light. I let off at 60mph and he went sailing by with a big grin on his face.
As far as towing. I haven't had the horse trailer hooked up and full of horses yet, but I have towed our 62 Ford 861 and it did that with no problem. Also had a 87 TBird on the trailer, going up a slight incline and took off from a dead stop. The wife was behind me in her 94 Mustang w/3.8 6cyl. and I walked away from her.
I had planned on taking it up to the 1/4 mile this summer just to prove what the big dog could run but a hernia stopped that.
I hit 14.7mpg once on a 115 mile trip to my parents house, but it usually gets 12mpg in the summer and 10mpg in winter when it's in 4 wheel drive.
If you have any questions. Don't be afraid to ask. I'll be more than happy to answer them.

Not a whole lotta problems, (from the service arena), with them.
They do sound like crap with dual exhausts tho. (got quite a few running around here). Just sound.........stupid.
Anyway, again, mileage is not a concern. They don't get any. Don't believe ford even puts a listing for it.
Personally, if I had something a 5.4 couldn't yank I wouldn't yank it. (my .002).

2001 F250 Super Duty w/ V10
I had a bright arrest me red '00 F250 XLT Crew Cab V10 Off Road 4x4 with 4.30 traction lock, off road package, towing package, and camper package. I just traded it in on a new Explorer about a month or two ago. It had 73,000 miles and was very fun to drive and was quick. I got 13.5 highway average and once managed 14.5mpg(running 75-85mph with 4.30s). I traded it in because the god damn spark plugs were blowing out of the heads. It was the 310 horse 6.8 and had the original plugs in it when the first plug blew out on passenger side 4 back at 72,000 miles near the house. I changed the plugs on the passenger side and installed an insert in the blown plug hole. One week later I was at Niagara Falls and the second plug blew (#2 on the driver side). Drove it ten miles to the nearest parts store (Pep Boys). I had to buy a bunch of tools, a plug, , a coil pack, and the special insert kit there and fixed it in the parking lot. My wife's parents were here visiting from Europe and they were with along with my 2 daughters and my wife. We had a truck load and that was embarrasing. When I got home I replaced the plugs in the driver side bank and thought that would solve the problems and no more plugs would blow. The next weekend my wife took her parents to Washington DC and it happened in PA on the way up from DC. That cost a pretty penny my wife had to drive it to a shop that would repair it and and to wait there while it was being done with her parents and my kids. Every time a plug blows out, it destroys a coil pack too. At that point I will not keep a vehicle that breaks down 3 times. When a vehicle is not trustworthy or gives me any insecure feeling when I go on trips they are gone. '99-'01 6.8 V10s and some 5.4s have that problem. Ford use to install a special insert when they were under warranty and a plug blew out but now the dealers say Ford does no recommend this and the head must be replaced ( $3500-$4000 ) since Ford doesn't have to pay for warranty work on them. It was a perfect totally reliable tire smokin truck until the last 1000 miles or so. I was told that the V10s had that problem but I didn't believe it nor did I think my truck would do that since it ran so strong and I put over 70,000 hard and many WOT miles on it. I will not ever consider another 6.8 again unless it is newer than a '02. The V10s have about 3 threads total that the plug can screw into plus the plugs are tapered seats and not the gasket seat like aluminum heads normally have. That is the problem with the V10s I had it for 4 years of trouble free driving. replaced the brakes once and the battery once and that's it (and of course many sets of tires BFG ATs on the back). It had 4 wheel discs and stopped great. It had 1 ton springs and a monster rear sway bar from the camper package. I loved that truck

the V10 is a decent engine, but i personally would look for a powerstroke(pre 2003).
