This is one of my latest creations. It is a hand made go kart with atv tires in the rear, an 8+hp briggs & stratton with a header. It has a racing seat and 5 pt harness as well as a full cage all built out of 1/16 wall mild steel 1" tubing. It was clocked at 37 mph and that hansom "studmuffin" you see sitting in it is me.

I've wanted to build myself something similar to that, except on a bigger scale and with a VW I-4...

I bet that thing hauls!

looks cool...and I bet it's a blast to drive!

I used to have one similar, well...maybe not quite similar, but it looked about like it. Had suspension on all 4 wheels (rear was a swingarm-type) and at first a stock Honda XL600R RFVC-head thumper. Later it evolved into turbocharged fun, and later yet, naturally aspirated on alky. Wrecked it in front of the house after jumping 2 separate ditches, going through a couple of oak trees, clearing 2 driveways and landing in my front yard's septic system leakage (winter time...yard stays wet/green in that area)----and never once hitting the ground between the time I jumped the first ditch and hit my front yard. I would bet I was going 70+ judging by the distance it went. Did one hell of a burnout, though....but the throttle stuck and that's the reason I sold it.

Sold it to a guy that wrecked it a couple times (though not nearly as dramatic as I did) and he trashed the frame and put the engine on a Kawasaki Mojave frame for drag racing. He was racing a friend of ours and hit something in a pasture and it went into a roll. Broke his left arm, right femur, left lower leg, sprained ankle, and broke 3 ribs.

I believe that engine was cursed from day one!

Awesome story Mavman, The cart did accelerate better than any yard kart I have ever been on but it was pretty heavy. I put that same motor on my "off-road" barstool racer and it nearly claimed my life on several occaisions. Unfortunately I sold the go kart a few weeks ago after about 2 months of fabrication but I did get plenty of ride time on it and what a blast. I think my barstool is alot funner though, it is so light that with that 8hp on there it would pull very nice. It isnt like your typical barstool racer, mine has a 37" wheelbase instead of the typical 25"-29", my width is 40" and the actual barstool is cut down so it only sits 25" from the ground. Its very stable and it has wheelie bars which help to keep it under control when I do a measured 65-70' wheelie. I will post some pictures pretty soon.

Not a very good pic but here is an old cart built way back when. My son now runs this thing around the ranch. It has an 18hp Onan engine with a 3 spd studebaker trans. Model A steering column. It was built for our neighbor when he was a kid back in the 50's. We had to put the motor on it but it runs like a top. GPS'd the speed and I got 49 in second gear. Its a handful trying to keep in a straight line.
