He got bad sick and it needed to be done (he was a chow about 14 years old). I don't believe in having somebody else do what I should do. Plus it's quick and painless, just a .22 into the base of the skull.
I could have taken it to the vet to have him put down, but again, it's my dog, so I wanted to do it. He was my very good watchdog. Best I've had.
I've had hunting dogs most of my life, and have a pretty good idea if they can be saved or not. It might seem cruel, but some of these dogs are a big investment, so you need to think of them that way. They ain't really pets. They're tools bred to work at what they're good at.
As a side note, my wifes dog of 10 years got bad sick and was dying. I was planning on shooting her after i took her down to the burial spot down by the river. She didn't quite make it and wound up in the backyard. You can see her grave from the back window now, but not my first choice.
