Why to always use the proper tools...

Just 2 weeks ago I was trying to get some liquid nail off of a caulk gun and slipped with a FRESH heavy duty Stanley razor knife, and layed the side of my left hand wide open. Good part was that it didn't hurt at all until like an hour later. Then it reminded me of my stupidity. Next best one I have is when I was jacking up my mom's old 1980s Buick LeSabre. The POS stock jack had NEVER been used. It was the kind that is a flat bar with notches in it. I started jacking up the car, and right when it was almost high enough the metal piece that held the car broke, and it sent the handle RIGHT into my middle finger at prolly 100mph. My finger had a HUGH blood blister wrapped almost ALL the way around it about 30 seconds later. I jacked it up with the stock jack to my F-150 and got the bad jack out from under it, and then beat it with a 10 lbs. sledge hammer a couple good times to make sure I never used it again. I also NEVER use stock jacks anymore.

Why to always use the proper tools...

I've done some stupid things to hurt myself, but by far the dumbest was when myself and a buddy of mine were hanging from an engine that was hanging from my hoist. I know, sounds like a recipe for disaster...

We were trying to get the flexplate off, so we had to keep the engine from turning. He got on one side with a ratchet on a bolt and myself on the other side trying to loosen a bolt. Didn't wanna budge. So we got the bright idea of just putting all our weight on it until it came loose. So in short order we were both hanging from the engine (which was hanging from the hoist) on ratchets. Now flexplates have a lot of teeth... Those teeth are sharper than they look.

So anyhow, you can guess what happened next. The bolt broke loose, and as I fell to the ground those teeth bit my hand nice and hard. Ripped the skin along where my thumb joins my hand pretty bad, pulling it open nearly an inch. My buddy says the look on my face was priceless when I looked at my hand. I kept holding it in front of him and asking if that white was bone, and he kept saying 'nah, it's nothing'.

The kicker was that I had a breaker bar in the car and there were a couple pipes laying next to the garage. It was a long day of working on cars and we were just wanting to get done pulling the engine and stripping it down. Not thinkin' too clearly.

So a few hours later, after packing up the engine, bringing it home, then packing up the tools and hoist and bringing that home, I finally went to the hospitol. Crazy nurse guy scrubbed vigorously at my wound with this hard bristled soapy scubby thing. When he looked at me while scrubbing he was all like 'There's a lot of nerves in there.' No **** sherlock! It didn't hurt until he scrubbed it, and when he did it hurt like hell. So I got me a few stitches and a scar. Scar actually turned out to not be bad at all, I thought it was gonna be worse.

Scars are fun though. Chicks dig scars, and it's always fun doing the first showing of all your scars with a girl and telling the stories behind them. You get to enjoy telling stories and having pride in your scars and that often leads to more fun things.

I though it was because you were drilling on them re-used header gaskets?

I had my hand wedged in between the tailshaft and trans tunnel tonight when the new kid in class hit the wrong foot pedal on the trans jack while i was pullig an AOD from a 93 t-bird.

Man it hurt so bad but i couldnt be pissed at him for two reasons one he looks like gilligan which is his nick name now even the teacher calls him that now and the other hes new.

Since ive been in the program a while now i get all the new guys and get to show them around and have them help me out.Kind of like a teachers helper but its fun except tonight. But he bought me a soda on break and i made fun of him the rest of the night which worked out well.

By the way when he jacked the trans jack up and my hand got wedged in i told him loudly to let the jack down and when he went down it was too far and the trans broke a peice where the dowel pin goes in on the passenger side. But its out and i hope this kids wiser.

I worked at an auto wreckers for a few years and once a guy came in to get a window for a morris mini drivers door. These early ones are two piece and slide back and fore. One sliding glass was stuck and as the door was off the car ,I rested it upright in front of the customer on the floor. As I had all my strenght pulling on the stuck glass it suddenly gave and shot across the frame to bite my finger that was holding the open end of the doorframe! Nearly cut the finger right off.The guy looked up at me expecting me to scream (or cry!) but I was joe cool and didn't even wimper as blood ran down the door side.
Short bit to the story is he got his glass, I lost a nail!

Don't be around me when I am installing a piston with a return spring in the forward drum.
