California Help Needed

My daughter moved to Oceanside Ca. last summer from here in beautiful Kentucky. She is finally trying to get herself legal by getting Ca. drivers licence and license plates on her 97 Merc Mountaineer 5.0. Her "check engine" light is on with the code for an EGR valve. I called around here to the parts houses and get a price of $45, she calls numerous ones in Ca. and the price is $145. I'm confused, did Ford have a different EGR on California car to pass emissions? If it would work I would just FedEx her one from KY. Any suggestions on passing the sniffer test?

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the same part was $100 more in california. I am fairly certain Ford did not make two different egr valves for that vehicle.

Now, more often then not it is the EGR sensor and not the valve that is the problem. The sensor attaches to the valve and over time the sensor wears and the resistance falls out of range. You may want to look into a sensor, usually $30 and send her both.
