Ouch!!!

i found out the hard way when I was 17 .... had a 390 stroked with 4 speed, didnt know any better and lost 2 toes on my right foot. Still have pain in my foot to this day at 33 yrs old. There was a previous question about the stamped steel flex plates and yes there is a SFI flex plate that should be used as well for you auto guys. I now run the SFI lakewood with 10000 rpm flywheel that is sfi approved as well, im not going to hurt someone or myself to save a buck after seeing what WILL happen. Espically with running 87 to 8800 in the lights.

Ouch!!!

Good god man, I now am reconsidering my last two burnouts by my house with my 72 Torino...right now, I don't have that sort of free cash laying about, but I have been wanted to source a blanket as a temporary thing...but because I've had the car apart for a frame off, and money is tight right now, I have my original flywheel resurfaced with a new clutch kit.
Food for thought.
thanks for a reminder like this 429

Here's another good example of what no trans shield/blanket looks like...and this is on an Automatic trans....the Torqueflite 727...which is notorious for grenading, removing body parts. In fact, I am understanding that the 727 was THE reason trans shields were invented in the first place!

mavman, thanks for that link- and I thought Cain was lucky...guess automatics can be even worse(especially those mopars mentioned due to what sounds like a fairly common failure mode).

Cain...had to bounce this thread back up in case any newbies hadnt seen it for one(last post almost 11 months ago- might convince some folks to look at a scattershield), and second- whats up with the Mach1?

I'm glad to see that this post is still around. Let my mistake be a warning to everybody that wants to save a couple $$$.

The Mach 1 is still sitting in a barn. I've pretty much collected all the parts to fix it, plus most of the parts to put together a pretty badass 351 Cleveland for it. Just a matter of doing it now. Lots of things have happened since the "explosion"
I've moved from the west coast to the east coast, which has really limited the amount of attention the Mach 1 has received. It's all good though. I'd say the chances are pretty good that it will be drivable this summer.

Ouch!!!

I had a 4v 351c in a '72 torino with a 4 speed a while back, I loved to do burnouts and go through the gears, til one day me and a buddy decided to do a clutch...... tore everything down saw what the flywheel looked like and how badly it was heat and stress fractured, very scary. Bringing back this post was a good idea-

Ouch!!!

I can tell you this much about what I have gathered from this. 1) No high rpm goofing off for me unless neccessary.
2) As soon as I go high performance I will make sure I do my best to not have any weak links.
3) You should definately use this to promote safety in this area.

Contact everyone you think would be involved. NHRA, Lakewood, Centerforce....whoever deals with this kind of thing. People are a lot more receptive than you probably think, especially with the internet communication we have now. At the least Cain, I think a well detailed posterboard dispalyed at car shows, with these pics would say it all. You certainly would reach alot of people this way. It looks like you have been given a second chance in this regard.

What about aluminum flywheels? How do they rater with all this??????????

Since it sounds like you have abandoned the 69 i could maybe find a nice crisp hundred dollar bill to trade you for it.

That hundred dollar bill sounds like a real nice one. I really like the crisp ones.
You don't want the Mach 1 though...It's got a hole in it.....

Re: Ouch!!!

Bump...

its been a few months- anyone that hasnt seen the pics on the first and especially fourth pages of this thread might want to take a look...the severed steering shaft and brakelines pic especially gave me the chills.
I'm suprised Lakewood or someone hasnt bought the rights to the pics for a scattershield advertisement...I know it makes me want one

any progress on the mach1 Cain?

EDIT- jeez, >17,000 hits on this thread...I'd put some links to it a while back on some other forums- looks like quite a few folks have been stopping in for a look...
