To put one on the track, you had to have them on the street. No disrespect meant to anyone. but it is not something I would have owned then nor would I spend for one now. They were just too heavy and boxy to be classed as a muscle car. Of course the meaning of muscle car has changed to include anything and everything that housed a V8. JMO and I respect yours.

retyler,
Of course the term "muscle car" has broadened over the years. I wouldn't say anything and everthing with a v-8 is a muscle car or even fast. My 64 galaxie has a 289 (with a blown head gasket now) and I wouldn't call it a muscle car. (yet) Drop a 427, 460 or even a hopped up 390 and a proper set of gears and I would most certainly say it is a muscle car now. I know back in the day (way before I was born) they started refering to post 64 cars as true "muscle cars" from the factory with factory 427's and such and were built with that in mind. Thats when they started going for speed. (lighter frames, thinner metal, bigger engines, ect) Thats fine, but I think there is something to be said for somebody that takes an old, boxy, heavy car and makes it go real fast. (Greg Cooks Battlestar comes to mind, fxcomet's liner and many more even though I don't really think of these cars as boxy more like sleek)
Hypothetical situation:
You pull up to a light in your post 64 "muscle car", whatever that might be (mustang, pontiac gto, vette, ect) Then a 64 galaxie station wagon pulls up next to you and has 289 emblems on the side. You think to yourself " I have a "muscle car" so I should be able to take that heavy beast of a grocery getter". Light turns green and the 64 station wagon blasts off and leaves you in your "muscle car" in the dust. You say to yourself "what the heck"
come to find out that the station wagon owner pulled the 289 and dropped a 460 in the car. You just got smoked by a grocery getter. I would now call the station wagon a "muscle car" out of respect.
Thats jusy MY opinion and I totally respect yours. I do understand what your saying about the term "muscle car" being labeled on any car from that period. When I tell people I drive a Galaxie people automatically say "oh a muscle car". I am just saying that in my opinion any car can be made into a muscle car if it is fast enough. Ok, well not any car, but most of them.
Just another quick question. Would the term "muscle" refer to how fast it goes or how much displacement the engine has. My friend has an old 60's Alfa Romao "Julia" I think. It has a 4 banger in it, but is a high compression race engine and hauls ass. Would this be a hotrod or muscle car or just a race car?
addendum:
after further thought, maybe hotrod or hotrodded might be a better term for a passenger car turned into fast/race cars.
