Mileage, not bad at 14.6...

Just filled up now and it comes out to 14.6 MPG. Not bad I say. 15 MPG would be pretty good, and it looks like it I didn't do so much flooring of the loud pedal 15 MPG should be attainable.

I think I may try jetting down again, I'm at 62 now and I think I'll try 60 and see how it runs. I also think my cam is retarded.

My cranking compression is low despite my high static compression ratio (from the 289 heads). I got the short block froma rebuilder so it wouldn't surprise me if the cam was retarded. I'm gonna swap cams this summer so I'll put a good timing set on it then and see if that helps. In any case, I think my low dynamic compression is hurting my mileage, more so since with this lame stock cam doesn't start getting any power until about 1800-2000 RPM (another reason I suspect the cam is retarded).

In any case, I was expecting about 14.25 MPG so 14.6 makes me happy. If I can regularly get 17 MPG (the most I ever got with the stock 302 and 2v carb) I may keep the Holley and not bother with a 4100 or Edelbrock. I'd rather spend the money on other things, like an electric fan and a cam.

looks like youre heading in the right direction with your gas usage, here in new zealand the price of gas is crazy,we pay about $1.20 a litre-yes thats a litre, and my 351w does about 10-12 mpg,got to be keen to be in this hobby here,i think a 600 edelbrock would see you getting a couple more mpg-good luck

I am getting about 20 mpg with my 375 hp 302. The car has 3.80 rear gears too. Damn I love overdrive!!!

I'm thinking I'm gonna put a T5 in the Gal. I want overdrive since I drive a lot of highway miles. I just gotta see how soon I can afford it... It'll pay for itself within a couple years, so I wanna do it as soon as possible. Hopefully I can swing it sometime this summer. Depends on what kinda deal I find on a transmission I suppose.
