You're lucky Ollie, my other car is a '96 Explorer with 130,000 miles . . .
Anyway, it's all good again because I think I found the majority of my problems. The week before I sent my car to the painter a year ago I had the rear end apart for a rebuild and new gearset, the front end apart for a complete rebuild, and a lot of the engine apart with things at powdercoat. Getting the car painted was kind of a spur of the moment opportunity that came up, so I had to rush to get the thing back together, after work, after the kids went to bed, and usually after a beer or two . . .
Anyway, all of that is my poor excuse for having put three bolts in the intake that were 1/4" too long. I only drove it for a couple of little rips around the neighborhood before I sent it off (and did notice then that it seemed flat), but I think it's just been downhill with every mile since. I pulled the intake tonight and it looks like it was freely sucking oil into the entire left bank of cylinders and two on the right - looked like someone had used a roller to paint the backs of the gaskets with 30w.
So that explains the lack of power, the burning oil, and that damn whistling sound - now I just need to find the wire to the temp gauge!
