Classic insurance for young guys??
I'm 20, will be 21 in January. I've been looking for classic car insurance for my '68. Now that I'm getting this Falcon the '68 is gonna be purely a summer toy. Will mostly be driven to cruise nights twice each week and probably to work or school now and again. Possibly on vacation each summer for a 1500 mile trip. I guesstimate it will see 3000-5000 miles/year.
I got excited when I was talking to a young guy up the street who has a '67 Fairlane and a '66 Galaxie convertible. He mentioned a company that he said insured him when he was younger. I called and they won't insure me until I'm 25.
Anyhow, I'm looking for some company that'll insure my '68 for less than the ~$100/mo I pay now, and preferably give me full coverage for a reasonable price in the event any more deer jump in front my my Gal. So if anyone knows of a company that will insure me, please let me know.

Classic insurance for young guys??
I called a bunch of classic insurance companies today. Hagerty said my age was not an issue and they would insure me (rate was a little less than yours), if it weren't for one detail...
My daily driver is going to be a '63 Falcon. They will not insure you if your daily driver is older than the vehicle you are putting on their classic insurance. Daily driver must be 25 years old or newer, and if it were newer than my classic there may be some wiggle room.
The issue is that they don't want the classic used as a "backup car" if my daily driver breaks. I told them I could most likely never be insured with them as I tried the whole newer car thing with two late-eighties cars and both had issues. The one that was fuel inejcted was unreliable in that it needed gas poured down the throttle body every cold morning. Never again will I own another car newer than the mid-70's.
All the other companies I called were rude to me in varying degrees when they learned my age. Only Grundy was not rude. The rest, several of which are local to me in NJ were rude. I tried them first because I'd rather support a local business than a huge national corporation. Oh well, it seems like the small companies are not so nice, so when I do insure with classic insurance I'll stick to a big company, probably as they were friednly and IIRC no mileage restrictions.
Well, if anyone else has any suggestions please let me know! Thanks guys.

Classic insurance for young guys??
Every company I called asked where the car was kept at night, to which I responded in my garage in the back yard. Not sure what companies require a garage, but I imagine your premium will be more if it's not stored in a garage. Not a big deal for me, as I just gotta clean out and re-organize the garage to get the Gal in there, which I was gonna do anyhow before the white stuff falls from the sky.
I also got my grandma's garage I can store a car in, though that's 20 minutes from here. Not a big deal if I can get classic insurance, as I can just drive it home and work on the Gal, but if it's not insured it becomes an issue. If I can't find a classic car insurance company who will insure me I'll be switching the insurance between the Falcon and the Galaxie every few months.
As it stands now it looks glum as to finding a classic insurance company who will insure my Galaxie. If that's the came I will not be driving the Gal until after the winter, but that's alright as we only have another two or three months 'till we get snow. I gotta fix the passenger window regulator adn the heater core if I'm gonna drive it in the winter. Maybe by next spring I'll be able to find someone to insure me. I'm gonan try calling more places tomorrow and hopefully have some luck.
There's just no way I'm gonna pay an extra $100/mo to insure two cars when I can only drive one at any given time and only carry minimum coverage (libility), which is the same value regardless of which car I drive. I can't afford that while I'm going to school. The $80-$100/mo I'll save by driving the Falcon will go straight into insurance and I won't be money ahead which defeats half the idea of getting the Falcon in the first place.
It's just ridiculous that it's so difficult to get classic car insurance. What does it matter how old I am? I'm not your typical punk-assed reckless youth driver. I have a clean driving record to back that up. Oh well, it's their service to sell so they have every right to decide who they will serve and who they won't.

Classic insurance for young guys??
That hagerty seems like a really great deal. I only have one question. In minnesota we have collector plates, which are only registered once. I would have been able to get a good rate with those, but i wasnt old enough to drive with them, and you only got 2500 miles a year. There are no restrictions like that with this Hagerty insurance is there?

Classic insurance for young guys??
Hagerty never mentioned anything about classic tags or mileage restrictions. They asked how many miles I expected to drive teh car, to which I answered that I would probably drive it 3000-4000 miles/year. That was not a problem with them. The person I talked to from Hagerty was also the most polite and friendly of any of the companies I called. If it werent' for their ridiculous thing about not driving an "old" car for a daily driver I would be thrilled to insure with them.

Classic insurance for young guys??
As for the daily driver being older than the classic - this makes no sense. All I had to do is prove the classic would not be a daily driver which I did by proof of insurance on my daily driver. As for the historical plate here in Michigan we save about $100 a year by having it.Our car club got a bill started with a our local state rep which would would almost eliminate the uninsured motorist insurance on any car with a historical plate ($25 veruses $144 per year we pay).Miles driven really wasn't an issue when I told them I average 2500 a year and I told them I race it about once a month.I am not covered while I am in the staging lanes or on the track itself but am anywhere else on the track grounds.

Classic insurance for young guys??
Do I qualify? Lets see...
(from their site)
Usage. Hagerty covers vehicles that are used on an occasional basis -- e.g. club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours and limited pleasure driving.
Storage. Collector vehicles must be stored in a fully enclosed, locked garage when not in use.
Driving records. Generally, one or two minor traffic violations or accidents are acceptable. We are not able to insure those who have experienced major infractions such as a DUI, reckless driving or excessive speed violations within the past 3-6 years.* All household driving records are subject to review by an underwriter.
Regular-use vehicles. Each licensed household driver needs to have a regular-use vehicle for daily driving and must maintain regular-use insurance in his or her own name.
I will not keep her ina a garage over the summer. The winter it will be in sotrage as long as its aval. So no Hagerty for me.
And Grundy also has the same poilcy. So no go for them either. Bah.
