Bogging at the track, but still had fun.

I took my mustang to the track last night. It has the 302 with 351w heads, weiand xcelerator, a holley 600vs, and a comp XE268 cam with old springs (haven't had a chance to get the new ones in) It seems to pull like crazy around 3000rpm and will keep pulling until 5500-6000. When I launch the car from 3500-4000 it burns the tire and then bogs down to 1500rpm. I still ran a 16.2 which is only .1 slower than before and that was without bogging the car off of the line. (remember this is 4000' elevation) I'm thinking my power valve might be out in the carb because I have had a couple backfires. Also I think I might need a bit more gear and a locking rear while I am in there. I have 3.25's right now . The car feels a lot stronger in the upper ranges, just whish it would launch better. All in all it was fun.

If the power valve is ruptured the car will run like crap at pretty much anything less than full throttle..I'm wondering if you were running out of fuel?..Good fuel pump, clean filter?

Could be fuel filter, I forgot to change it out and the car sat for a year when I was in Korea. I am planning on replacing all of the rubber fuel lines this week so I'll do that. When I floor it the car on the street it falls on its face then surges. Normally I can tune it out. I might just get a rebuild kit and clean the interior of the carb. It could be clogged with junk from sitting. The fuel pump is a stock mechanical type. Should be adequate at my low power levels.

Sounds like the secondaries might not be opening at the correct time(probably too fast)..Try unhooking them and see what happens?..You may need a different spring to get them set up properly.

I wish they had time slips at the strip so I have no idea what my 60ft was. My speedo cable burned on my headers so I had no way to know approximately how fast I was going. A real strip is supposed to be opening in a few months, NHRA style. The other track that was a real track shut down. This place is just a runway thats closed down on fridays and sundays with a time clock. Its a step up from street racing.

I'll dig up my spring collection and see what happens when I put different ones in there.

Mine does the same thing - I have the same cam, and Roush 200's. I really need to dig into it and get it sorted.

Good to hear you had some fun!

Yeah you don't need timeslips to get it started in the right direction..Tune it till it feels good and have some fun roasting the tires at the air strip..Once you get to a real track with timers you can do the "fine tuning"....There aren't any drag strips within a couple of hours of me so I would be happy with even an air strip type track..The local oval track decided to let us use the front straightaway once and even though it was probably only about 500 ft long it was still lots of fun.No timing lights or clocks just bragging rights if you beat the guy next to you...I had a great grudge match or two against a guy in an early 60s Vette with a 300 hp 327..He couldn't understand why my 230 hp 302 kept spanking him.
