Ok, I saw the cooooolest thing on Musclecar the other day. It was a simple electronically controlled valve that turns your closed exhaust into an open header config. Awesome.

Ya, it's illegal just about everywhere - but I think you'd really have to be deep into POP (pissing off the police) to get a ticket for it. Some version of that has been in the JC Whitney catalog for about a billion years, but they show it on Musclecar and it's the new hot thing.

Yup,

I've got the JC Whitney version on my '53. The exhaust dumps out the 3" side pipes I have in place of my running boards. I ALWAYS make sure they're open when the Harley guys get close! They tend to set off car alarms in parking lots though........

They just close by way of a butterfly valve. I dont see that making a good enough seal to completely quiet the exhaust when closed though.

Actually they do a pretty good job of sealing. I was surprised to be honest. I had one on my old SVO for a while. I liked the quiet exhaust (after all it was a 4 banger) but sometimes I wanted to open up the downpipe and hear the turbine whistle. Bad part was, the whistle was music to my ears, until the wastegate opened, then it was abnoxious! You could feel EVERY firing pulse inside the car!

Later on I upgraded the turbo to a HE351 and used single 3.5" exhaust. That turbo was quieter so I never ran a muffler. Didn't need it. Loud, but not as bad as the stock T3 was!
