The Tarus was the first domestic car designed with European styling. When it was first introduced most either didn't like it or didn't like it very much. Shortly after every car manufactured, big and small, looked like a Tarus, even the imports. The beginning of the round body. Problem is Ford made it too small for the American driver(family) and didn't give it enough power options. If they had started with a true mid size, as they seem to be doing now, I think it would have faired much better.
Maybe one day this SUV craze will go away, like the mini van did, and hopefully we will see some decent cars on the road. Never could figure out why you would need a big gas guzzling 4x4 vehicle in a snow free environment.

Station wagons went out of production then and with the advent of the "Baby Boomers" there wasn’t a car on the market to put all the baby accessories. So the small Montero's, Troopers and those small Jeep Cherokees started it all. Most thought it would just be a fad and never got on with it till they saw it was here to stay and that the demand for them was great.
Then came the mini Vans to try and hit that very same market. Kind of a cross between a SUV and a station wagon.
Station wagons have been making a slow come back but folks have gotten use to sitting high in the saddle in those SUV's where they have a better view and command of the road. And the auto makers keep shoving them at us.
I agree you don’t need a Hummer to hall a baby stroller. It is more about status now than anything else.
