I\'ll Have a Fire Extinguisher on Payday

I've caught my carb on fire a few times. I usually just leave it there until it starts and try not to pump the pedal...

Scary for bystanders that have never seen a flaming carb though.

A co2, dry chemical, halon will all work. Is halon the right term? The one that is used to dissipate oxygen and used mostly on electrical fires. Sometimes I can't seem to find my memory. A wet rag(non combustible) will sometimes save the day.

Fire Extinguishers:

Type A - Used for combustible solids, such as wood, paper, and cloth (golf bags included). Identified by the symbol A within a green triangle.

Type B - Used for combustible liquids, such as oil, gas, and paint thinner. Identified by the symbol B within a red square.

Type C - Used for electrical fires, such as fuse boxes, electric motors, and welders. Identified by the symbol C within a blue circle.

Type D - Used on fires involving combustible metals, such as zinc, magnesium, and titanium. Identified by the symbol D within a yellow star.

Hope this helps, it did me.

P.S. Halon WAS used in data centers to remove the oxygen source from fires. It's since been replaced with something more environmentally friendly.

Speaking of fires, a couple of weeks ago before the snow god reappeared I pulled the Falcon outside to wash off some of the winter crude it had accumulated while sitting in the garage. Got it all cleaned and fired it up to let it idle for a few minutes while I put the hose back. Kept smelling something burning, but didn't pay much mind, just thought maybe it was the wood stove. The closer I got to the car the more I smelled it. Just passed it off as maybe oil from hand prints burning off of the exhaust. Looked under the car and sure enough there was smoke coming from what looked like the exhaust pipes. Then I decided to check out the motor in the sun light ( we haven't had much of that) and raised the hood. Oboy! The smoke was coming from a burning rag lying on the headers that had I stuffed there while working on the master cylinder. Scared the living you-know-what out of me. I grabbed and discarded the towel and luckily no damage was done. If I had backed in the garage and left it burning something real major could have happened.
I still call myself names for that mistake and they aren't good ones.

I used to carry one, but soon got out of the habit. Seemed like once I got one - everytime I turned around, someone or something was on fire. It's probably not as big an issue with the cars of today - but when carurators were King, there were a lot more cars running around with that "tell-tell" ring in the center of the hood.

My last fire extinguisher was used to put out an engine fire, on the side of the road. Two things I learned, people are not appreciative (I was out the cost of the exstinguisher - the owner didn't even offer anything on the cost) and everyone had a better idea of how to put out the fire than I did. I got to feeling taken advantage of, stopped buying them.

I know I sound like the Grinch, but like the guy diagnosed as being schizophrenic just because he thought he was being followed everywhere.

Later found out his company had hired a Private eye, they thought was stealng from the company. Moral is - even if you think a guy is a grinch; doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't have a good reason. Just make sure it is big enough to handle most fires. A 25lb ABC will do just fine, or a nice big C02. Spend some money and you will get a good size that is rechargable after use.

I would have had to sit til the starter cooled off. I restarted it becuase it died 3 times and the last start I heard that awful poof type backfire and knew that wasn't a good sound but by then the starter wouldn't turn over. I had thought it was the battery in the beginning but discovered later it was a starter problem.
You're right on bystanders though! While in the parking lot putting out the flames a fire truck showed up and I thought, who called the fire dept?! They were there for something else and it was coincidence but you just never know when these things happen in the public eye! People remembered that for a long time afterwards. Oh I remember you, you're the one that had their car on fire in the parking lot.
I was going to try the rag trick but that idea was doused when I lifted the hood and flames were shooting out the side of the carb by the linkage also at that moment.

Whoops, well it's good you got it put out.

One of my buddies was paged to the front of a Wal-Mart once with "Will the owner of a white pickup come to the front of the store, it is on fire."

Boy that's a big change from just leaving the headlights on! Grab the weenies and marshmallows there's a bonfire in the parking lot!
I'd hate to hear that kinda news on the pa system. No trouble figuring out where you parked though.
