I\'ll Have a Fire Extinguisher on Payday

Until then, no more welding. On Sat. I was trying to tack a washer onto a clamp (long story). The clamp had some sort of plating on it. I'm not sure if it was chrome or not. It looked about like the finish that you'd see on a Craftsman wrench.

Anyway, while trying to tack this washer onto the clamp, I noticed these balls of molten metal SHOOTING, not just falling, but SHOOTING all over the damn place. I really had to hold the torch in the piece for a long time to get the washer tacked in place with fireballs flying all over the place the whole time.

Once I flipped my shield up, I noticed my golf bag was on FIRE. I reached over three bikes, grabbed it, threw it into the back yard & hosed it down. One of these fireballs dropped into the bottom of my golf bag & caught all kinds of shtuff on fire.

I now have a large hole in the bottom of my bag & several melted grips. Glad I didn't burn the house down & especially glad I hadn't re-gripped my clubs yet.

All kidding aside, it's STUPID to be welding with flamables within 10 feet (them fireballs was just a flying off that plating).

Sounds like you were welding some kind of galvanized material. It does that.

Glad it wasn't any worse than it was! Just be careful....that galvanized stuff (along with lots of other anti-corrosive stuff) gives off super toxic fumes when melted/heated.

Great story and storytelling. Hope you don't mind Rick, that one made the homepage. Hopefully, we can all learn from that mistake!

ooops! before i had a welder i hired some jerk to weld a few things and he put a furny pad(thick blanket) under my car, lays on it and starts welding...i went inside for a second and came back out to find his blanket and pant leg on fire.
glad he wasnt under my gas tank! he didnt even know he was on fire till i yelled at him and doused him with a bucket o water! the blanket was like a small bonfire in seconds.
he could have jumped up hit his head on the car, got knocked out and burnt up had i not come back right away.

speaking of. my friend saw a guy get a huge shock while working on the running engine, reaction made him jump up and back into the hood hook...it went into his head he passed out and died...but not before falling into the fan.

BE CAREFUL!

Whoo - don't weld galvanized things unless you are NOT breathing while you do it. That stuff is nasty!. Even a quick pass with a sander will help a great deal.

Glad everythings ok, though!

You guy's are retarded..

I pull coil wires all the time and NEVER get shocked...

PULL FROM THE DIST SIDE... Hehehehehe The coil will arc out against it's self before jumping over 5 inches of dead air...

I really do like you guy's! But sometimes you're nearly as retarded as I am.

FE and the next time you have to do it watch out. You know what they say, what goes around....
I bought a extinguisher after having my carb on fire. It sits on the ledge between my seat and the door. Hubs kept puting it in the trunk and I kept saying that the time it takes to get the trunk key in that hole when you're freaked is too long and I kept putting it back where I had it. He finally left alone. Haven't needed it yet but you just never know.

Glad to hear that it was only the golf bag and not more!

Deb
