Took the Bronco wheelin today...

Went over a little used road called Rocky Gap on the west side of the valley. Meg had been hounding me for months to put the Bronco through its paces in the dirt, so I figured it'd be a great Mothers Day surprise.

Mostly good road, but about a 1/2 mile of it was through a badly eroded wash, and I just got by with my stock suspension and 33's. Enjoy the pics.

These first two show the maximum amount of flex I have. Really need to get a wristed arm for the front end.

This is the last place you can actually see the Red Rock area we started at, way in the back ground.

Break time at the summit.

This is the only pic I got in the wash, spent more time driving than worrying about pics, but it gives you an idea

My younger boy slept through it ALL!!!

Big respect from me taking it out with the family. Nice work keeping it real and down home. Great experiences for the kids too!

Thanks You still plannin on a trip to the Rubicon this year? I've wanted to hit that trail for years, and the Bronco is quickly proving itself trail worthy.

Darryl,
I was just using my dry sense of humor with the Rubicon statement. I am taking the truck to the high country this weekend though, near Truckee, CA. We'll get some shots. Should be beautiful.
Cheers,
Jon

Actually, I was just putting together a list of must haves for my weekend trip. Since I'm totally new to off-roading maybe you can add to it for me.

1) Spare Tire!
2) Hi Jack
3) Extra Fluids
4) Array of Tools

Mike, I would definitely add a come-a-long, even if you already have a winch.

Nice pics man! It's been way too long since I got my Bronco off the pavement... maybe this year I'll be able to talk the wife into a camping trip or two

Mike: Add a come-along to that list, they can come in very handy at times! And of course, Duct Tape!!!

Fire extinguishers are NEVER a bad idea The come along, and a long strap or chain in case the closest winching point is far away. If you're gonna air your tires down, you'll want an electric compressor. Or build an on board air system out of an old York JB weld, a wire brush, and some carb cleaner come in handy if you puncture the oil pan.

I'd also take a moment to grind the edge of your dana 60 cover so it isnt the lowest point on the truck. Most dana 60 covers are just a tad bigger at the housing, and some lil harmelss rock or stump you dont think twice about will be enough to peel the rear diff cover off.

IF you havent done a lot of wheeling, bring more water than you think you;ll need. Road dust will cover you, and you'll be breathing it, you can get dehydrated quick.

That looked like a great mother's day drive to me! Must of rocked the little guy to sleep.
I miss being a kid and going on the sunday drives on the logging roads in oregon and getting stuck in the mud in the '61 wagon and all that fun stuff. Remember some of it like it was yesterday.
