Not necessarily...
Here's a little background...
A few summers ago I ran a guy with a turbocharged Honda. They wanted to run a street tire Mustang for a few bucks.
I was there hanging out. My car had drag radials, but looked and sounded like a mostly stock car with loud exhaust.
My cohorts fronted the money and I said I would take the run.
We ran, I killed him out of the hole, and lifted before the end so he was right on my bumper when we passed the agreed finish line.
They agree they lost, we all go home.
During the next week, they continue to talk smack about how they were force to run a car on a drag radial vs. their street tire'd car, low boost, yada-yada-yada.
They said it was only a 14 second run and my car was overhyped.
I tell them they can do whatever they want to their car, including slicks, and I will run them again at the spot of their choosing for a few more bucks.
My friend and I were determined to embarrass these guys, so we installed his plate system with a 100 shot, and he let me borrow a set of slicks.
So we wait around for them to show, then follow them waaaaaay out into the middle of nowhere. Farmers fields all around, no houses, about a half hour from the nearest "town", which consisted of a post office and a fire hall.
Cop's would never show up out here in the middle of the night(right ) and no traffic to speak of.
The Civic gets there, and we have to wait for them to mount the slicks. The quarter gets measured and marked, and we line up. We both warm up the tires, I flip the switch, and we are getting ready to go.
Then I see headlight in the rear view. I was in the left lane, so I pulled off into the grass. He did the same on the opposite side. The flagger stayed in his car as it was already off the road.
Then the red and blue light come one as they get close.
I figured that was the end...car was gone, so was the license, and what the heck where these cops doing out here?
The cops took each of our licenses and went back to his car. They let us it for quite a while longer than I think it really took them to check us out.
One of them came back, gave me my license back.
He asked me what we were doing.
Nothing, just hanging out and talking cars sir.
"In the middle of the road?"
Yes, Sir.
"Were you street racing?"
No sir.
"Where they?"
Don't know what they were doing sir, I didn't see them street racing though.
"You're sure no one was street racing, huh?"
"No sir"
"Hmph..."
He then gave me back my license, and told me they were going to be patrolling this road and they better not catch me out there anymore.
The other two(racer and flagger) got similar reprimands, and we were sent on our way.
I was shocked that I got off so easy, since "streetracing" (idiots weaving in and out of traffic type) had been in the news in my area lately. We were not those kind of people.
I spend a lot more time at the track now, though.
All true, and the only good "Cop let me off" story I have. Sorry it's so long.
Here is the video of the first run, the only one that got off.
VID PROOF
Race starts about 2 minutes in, the beginning was real-world PINKS-esqe crap talk. Amusing if you want to take the time.
The Civic went on (months of tuning later) to run a
10.9@130 on race gas, meth injection, and a crap load of boost. It usually ran 11.7's with mph in the 120's.
