Some Things Aren't What They Use To Be

I just finished a conversation with a compadre across town. He has been driving Ford trucks for years but last year when he got the new truck fever in a lapse of good judgement he bought a new Toyota Tundra. He said he was remembering his Dad's old four cyl Toyota that ran 300,000 miles with only a timimg chain replacement.Well he's had the Tundra for about a year now and it has been back in for warranty work too many times to count. The pretty high gloss paint has faded to the point that the truck looks about ten years old. Some things aren't what they use to be.Calspec

Your friend made an expensive mistake. Ford builds the best, most durable trucks by far. Even 95% of the diehard Chevy guys who race pull their trailers with an F series. I flirted with GM pickups and Suburbans in the '80s and '90s because I don't like kingpin front ends on a daily driver. But the Chevs didn't hold up nearly as well otherwise. BTW, I use my '89 F-150 as a truck! Mine isn't a glorified passenger car.

I have to disagree with Tbirdchick as to the quality of Ford trucks, I just had to replace the alternator on my '93 F-150 pickup with the 4.9 inline six-it barely has 189,000 miles. So much for quality.

Ford is the best. There's a reason why my dad has had 3 F150's (80's, 99, and 02) and now an 08 Super Duty. All were great and as far as the 99 and 02, are still running w/ over 200,000 miles w/ only the seat worn.

Hey, Calspec, you need to show your buddy the article where Ford BEAT Toyota for the top quality award!

Re: Some Things Aren't What They Use To Be

I've got to agree Fords are the best full size trucks out there but as far as small trucks go Toyota is one tough little truck. My 93 toyota has 250,000 miles on it and is still running perfectly. It still has the original alternator the original back brake shoes even! I did change the timing chain at 150,000 just as a maintenance precaution because if the timing chain guides wear out the chain will wear a hole in the backside of the timing chain cover and into the water pump housing. These little trucks run forever!

MXJunkys '03 Tundra seemed to hold up pretty well for the three years that he owned it. MXJunky didn't exactly baby the rig, either.
